Dining in a Virginia Orchard
The bear came back today. I was preparing lunch when there was Bruno having his own lunch in the “orchard.” The orchard consists of two fruit trees that didn’t make it and one pear tree that may still be offering something edible.
Bruno is a teenager or young fella who is out on his own I think because we never see the Mama Bear. Anyway, as I sat down for lunch I was imagining joining the kid and sharing a pear or two.
Fortunately, reason and abject fear stopped me from being mauled to death.
Shopping Delusions
I thought I finally purchased the perfect pair of jeans yesterday!
Some stores have mirrors that make things look great. The illusion is usually fleeting. This store was like that. Wow! I looked young and glamorous in that mirror.
And the jeans even felt good – the stretchy kind you know and high wasted like in the old days so they wouldn’t slip down below my belly button. A bit long but I began hemming them as soon as I got home.
Well yes, they are comfy all right and I wore them all day today. But some people (like me) don’t have the right body image for jeans. Mine always seem rumpled and a bit too baggy (my body as well as the jeans). Obviously, jeans should emphasize curves shouldn’t they?
Having a flat butt doesn’t help I guess. I mean you have to have curves to emphasize them.
Yesterday’s Outing
Yesterday was a big shopping day and lunch out with my friend, Norma. We do something exciting like that once a month. A lot of talking goes on (stored up for four weeks).
As for shopping, I am almost overwhelmed in those big malls with so many choices. Living in small town rural Virginia you get used to limited buying opportunities. This time my friend and I added “The Cheese Shop” in Stuart’s Draft, Virginia, for spices and nuts, dried fruits and homemade jams and jellies, and cheese of course.
We had lunch at a Thai restaurant but I missed Bruno.
And on the way home we stopped for a frozen yogurt dessert. It was a cool ending to a lovely day.
You have such exciting days!

Sounds like fun! You were wise to skip lunch with Bruno, though!

I’m laughing out loud at the cartoon at the beginning of your post. Reminded me of going out to lunch with a friend a few years ago at a new restaurant, and mid-way looking to my right and thinking I knew the person seated near me, but probably years ago, since she was no longer young. Then I realized that the only thing on that right wall was a mirror, and I was looking at myself. Gawd, that was not a good moment. ;-0
Like you, I cannot tolerate shopping at malls. Too big, too overwhelming. Give me a computer and my fingers, and I find shopping on-line much easier to handle. I can even find my high-rise jeans with the elastic waist. 🙂

There’s a famous saying which goes something like this: “Discretion is the better part of valor.” I think you can consider yourself very valorous today.

You didn’t invite Bruno in for lunch?!? LOL – just kidding :). That sounds like a lovely day out with your friend, and don’t be so hard on yourself about the jeans. As long as they are comfy and you feel good, that’s all that matters. The hell with the mirror I say!

I get completely overwhelmed by those big shopping malls any more too. Just too much! Maybe it’s just as we…ahem…mature, we like things simple??

You could put some apples out for Bruno but then you will have a resident bear.

I’m a cautious when I see moose or coyotes in my woods. If I saw a bear – I think I’d have to call the wildlife authorities! We only live a mile from the city, and I would imagine they would want to relocate the bear family to a safer location for bears.

They are beautiful to see but worrisome as well. Something yummy is the perfect way to end a day out. Have a great weekend.

LOL for your rumpled body and jeans! I share your pain on that one – and also on the no-butt issue which I suppose is better than the opposite problem :-). Stay away from Bruno – he looks friendly but trust me, you don’t want to test that theory!!!

You too Anne. But having a frequent bear visitor here is a little disconcerting.

They do look cuddly though…. like big fuzzy puppies. Ha!

Now I am laughing out loud at your familiar friend in the mirror. That happened to me on the computer camera thing. I noticed an old hag there and was astonished to find it was me! 🙂 I no longer have laptops with camera capability.

How brave can I get watching a bear from my locked kitchen window? Oh yes- the discretion part of valor. Hiding behind locked doors shows definite discretion. I am my own hero and thanks for that Al. 🙂

Thank you my friend for reminding me that mirrors don’t matter anymore. I may even drape them over or donate them to GoodWill – along with clocks. After all, what is retirement for but to ignore time and deceive yourself into thinking you are slim and curvaceous in the right places?

Yes – Ahem- I like the simple aspects of maturing. However, I have always hated big malls and too many choices – even when I was a young whippersnapper. Maybe I was mature for my age?

I think Bruno is already in residence and has the memory of our little fruit tree embedded in his mind – and bears don’t even hibernate in Virginia so I expect we will see him searching all year. He is entertaining but there has to be a downside to living with big black furry wild things in your backyard.

You are right of course, but we are “out in the county” about 10 miles from town.

Agreed! Lunch with Norma or the bear – both gifts for sure.

Smart move. I’d like to just get rid of all mirrors, period, but I’m told I shouldn’t do that. Haha. Seriously, though, we do have a beauty in each age. I’m hoping our generation can learn to celebrate the looks that come with wonderful loving living. xo

We just got back from vacation in Groves, Tx and Biloxi and Lucedale Mississippi. My husband said he heard my cousin’s husband say there were bears in Miss.! I never knew that, yet then again, I never went hunting with my cousins in the piney woods. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Glad you had a great day and no furry altercation!

I really liked how you describe the mirrors in women’s clothing stores. You’re absolutely right – they make me feel young and glamorous. And, then when I get home with the clothes, sometimes I like them – and other times I can’t figure out why I liked them in the store.

Your bear friend reminds me of a friend who lives a bit off the beaten track. She came home to find a bear in her kitchen, eating ice cream out of her freezer. Don’t give yours the key.

That is funny…. but maybe not. I do not wish for a bear eating ice cream in my kitchen! But Bruno has been back ever again since this post. He loves that one pear tree.
