Lamplighter's Sky

It was dusk as I my friend and I were leaving the library today and we noted a pink-clouded sky as the city lamps were lit.  It reminded me of

Bing Crosby and The old Lamplighter 

He made the night a little brighter wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter of long, long ago

You’d hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would hide a lonely heart you see

If there were sweethearts in the park
He’d pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be

For he recalls when dreams were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him alone in memory

I love the space between day and night

when the clouds portend the end.

And when the sky shifts,

shrouded with filtered light

and a quiet peace descends.

NIGHT FALLS GOOD ONE

There is something darkly beautiful

about winter’s setting sun

engulfing the world in tones of peach and red;

like a blanket covering

 the naked trees of winter

 and tucking in the wildlife

and me.
