Now is the time of year when our fascinating “hummers” start to overeat because Hummingbirds need to fuel up for a long grueling journey to Venezuela.
I heard that on the radio once – the thing about Venezuela being their ultimate destination.
And I tend to believe everything I hear.
This little traveller resting on top of my umbrella has doubts though.
He evidently doesn’t believe what he heard about directions to Venezuela.
He keeps landing and looking north and then looking south.
Meanwhile, six more of his family ignore him and are busy swooping and arguing in a deafening buzz.
They are making a big fuss with all that fighting, and wasting energy over who gets “first dibs”/dips at the feeder.
Ah, I know it will not be long now when they will all take off for Venezuela.
Bon Voyage my little friends! Β Fare thee well!
And please –
Listen to the radio next Spring and find your way back to Virginia!
They are such precious little creatures, I love them! We have jillions of them in Las Vegas Valley in summer. My mother would have feeders all around the house with her own special mix in the feeders. I am sure she feeds them in Heaven these days! π

Hope your hummer gets going in the right direction! It is truly amazing how far birds and butterflies migrate, isn’t it?!

Our hummingbirds are busy in NC, too. I’ll miss them, but I will probably move my desk away from the sliding door because it will be too cold to sit here.

Cute post! We were late putting out our feeder, but they drank all the juice down and have set off on their journey. π

I guess we have to migrate to warmer places – just like the hummers do. π

I wonder if they really do come back to the same feeders the next year. π

Thanks John! I’m sure they were there but I don’t remember Hummingbirds in Florida where I grew up. That makes seeing them here in Virginia a very special treat. π

Wouldn’t be amazing to attach a micro-camera (like a mini go-pro) to one of them and go along on the journey vicariously?

The hummers must love Costa Rica, too. Years ago, we saw plenty of them when we visited there. I envy you, Dor. I haven’t seen a hummingbird in years. If they live in Florida, they’ve escaped my eagle eye. π

Nah, Venezuela is much too far. Stop off in CA for the winter. I’m here.
