Are the ads for faraway places calling to you? Do you need to escape the mundane? Is the Winter getting you down?
Go Shopping Somewhere New!
Last week was fun! My friend and I went shopping. Ho Hum! Everybody knows that shopping is “therapy,” but what about the thrill of FOOD shopping?
Admittedly, grocery stores are not exactly visits to paradise but when you live (like I do) in extreme suburbia (extremely close to being rural) and in a place that can be described as “no man’s land,” you too might find big city grocery stores to be a bit alluring.
And even if you already live in a big city, escaping to the inner sanctum of a truly caring market can be at least transporting. It will get you out of the house and “blow the stink off,” as my good old Dad used to say.
Have a Regular Plan of Escape.
I escape by going on a once-a-month “outing” with a good friend. A lot of the excitement is in the planning and planning should be part of any program designed to accomplish successful escape.
For January’s a pre-planned monthly outing, my pal and I drove an hour to Charlottesville, Virginia. The time en route let us catch up on our lives and any local gossip missed since the last outing. Charlottesville is a pretty big city. The University of Virginia is there and Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, to say nothing of a plethora of shopping opportunities. There is a Downtown Mall where no cars are allowed and most dedicated shoppers probably start there but we stuck to the outskirts of town this time.
First, Get it Out of your System. Try On Beautiful Clothes!
We started at Chico’s where the sizes in chic ladies’ apparel are tagged as 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, and lately in added point-5 increments like 2.5, 3.5, and I hope “on up.” I’m not sure how high they go but I want to be mentally prepared after this winter of more malingering than moving. And I just love those little low size numbers that help me hone latent skills in the art of self deception.
I must say I admired my own restraint and actually did not walk out of Chico’s with anything but vague yearnings.
Lesson Learned: Stick with Food as a Destination!
Next stop was BoDo’s – a very busy, happily beloved shop where people load up on plenty of New York style bagels. My friend buys enough to freeze (conceivably to avoid future starvation) and I planned to buy enough to guarantee a Size 4 at Chico’s by next month’s outing! I joined the masses and ordered 2 whole wheat (my nod to healthful eating), 2 onion, and 2 sesame. Now I wish I had more and not just from fear of starvation. They are absolutely delicious and it’s not bathing suit season yet after all.
The point is, I did not have to travel all the way to New York to get the real thing in bagels and the flavors are still lingering a week later. This was my first clue that food shopping can transport a person to faraway places and create the illusion of a true escape.
Bodo’s Bagels is a trio of Charlottesville bagel shops serving “authentic New York water bagels” and has been a perennial winner of the C-Ville Weekly’s “Best of C-Ville” awards and was named by the magazine as Charlottesville’s “king of bagels.” *Photo by Adam Sowers
Now Keep Moving! Go Beyond Bagels!
Beyond Bodo’s we hit Whole Foods and if you haven’t been there, it’s equivalent to a faraway land of dreams. We don’t have a Whole Foods where we live so I was entranced with all the produce in brilliant Technicolor. There are cheeses of all conceivable kinds, sizes and flavors, the freshest looking fish and meats, the most heavenly bakery and everything you can imagine in between! Would that I could live in a corner of Whole Foods! I settled for a luscious looking apple pie (for Bill of course) and three loaves of bread; two Sour Dough and one Rye.
You might call this a “carbohydrate outing” since now I had
3 loaves of bread, 6 bagels and an apple pie!
Apples are healthful you know. So are grains. I am beyond happy!
Finally: Be Sure to Head to Joe’s!
Please, we are not advocating an illicit affair! Across the road from Whole Foods my friend and I visited Trader Joe’s. That’s a market, not a man! We don’t have a Trader Joe’s where we live either. I have not figured out TJ’s yet but someone described it as “the way old-timey markets used to look and feel.” And someone else said, “They have such different things.” Maybe the latter friend was thinking of Two Buck Chuck (which may have gone up like everything else) – a sort of cheap wine that I hear is pretty good. I did find some lovely goat cheese and a bottle of sub-lingual B-Vitamins my son advised will provide energy. And I certainly need the energy to recuperate from all that shopping and inner-mind travelling.
And there you have it!
If you really do want to add spice to life, try shopping, but not just any shopping.
Try FOOD shopping somewhere new.
You will feel happy too and you will return home with the odd sense that you have been far away on an exotic vacation.
You will even have the extra weight and caloric souvenirs to prove it.
Mmmmmm, food shopping :). What a wonderfully perfect outing. I could almost taste everything you were describing! Great post Dor.

Wonderful post, Dor! I love Charlottesville too! Yes, those sizes on Chico’s apparel are something aren’t they? I noticed the little half-size change recently too. We have Whole Foods in Richmond which I love and a Trader Joe’s that I’ve not yet visited. Have you heard of Wegman’s? It’s coming to town and the excitement is palpable. It will give Whole Foods a run for its money….and their bagels are To Die For!!! Loved this fun post, Dor, almost felt like I was with you.

Nothing like a good romp through a food store to revive our winter-weary spirits. We often eat lunch at WF before or after shopping. Cheaper and better than many restaurants, the food is great, freshly prepared and the presentation is always mouth-watering. What is not to like? And TJs is one parking lot over. Next time check out their candy (salted caramels and English almond encrusted toffee). I guess I should feel blessed that ours is only 30 min. away. 😉

I do like your ideas! It is always more fun to shop away from home. Thanks for the suggestions!

When we lived in Iowa, we went to Omaha and did the same thing. It was just different restaurants, different stores, and things to buy that we didn’t have at home. I am fortunate for now to have a Whole Foods down the street from us in Richmond and we shop there frequently.

Sounds like a great outing, Dor. I love Monticello and Trader Joes. Your son was correct, sub-lingual B-Vitamins will improve your energy. I had to cut back on my dosage because I was way too hyper and couldn’t sleep. My blood work indicated I was way over the normal range.

I haven’t been to Monticello since I was severn years old (that was a few years ago). I would so love to go. Charlottesville looks lovely too~

“blow the stink off”? Love it!! I love Cville. David and I lived in Louisa a little while and would frequent it quite often. My sister-in-law is from there and her parents still live there. I have seen Bodo’s Bagels a hundred times, but never stopped. I may stop next time I am down that way. And beautiful Montticello! Been there quite a few times. What a great escape! 🙂

Hey, in the dead of winter even FOOD shopping IS fun! If you ever get to Cincinnati, go to Jungle Jim’s, an international food market. It is huge and the food (including produce, meats, and seafood) from all over the world is fascinating. And yum about those NY style bagels. One of our grocery stores here (in rural land!) actually sells bagels that are shipped from a bakery in NY and I buy them every time I go to that store. But the best bagels I’ve ever eaten in my life were in Morristown, NJ where my son and daughter-in-law formerly lived. Wish I had a freezer full of those bagels!

I think food shopping is a brilliant idea. You can always find something different that the locals eat to bring home as a souvenir. It’s always welcome, not some weird thing destined for a garage sale. When I used to go to CA more frequently, husband always asked “Can you please bring me back some of that apple juice packaged in those glass apples?”

Wish you were with me too Barbara! And yes, I have been to a Wegman’s somewhere with our son and family. There was a whole restaurant upstairs! Wow! Doesn’t take much to impress country people. 🙂 You are mighty lucky to have all those special places so near.

I knew it Eliza… you and so many of my cyber-pals have access to all that gourmet luxury and I am truly envious! And there you go – lunching at WF! Grrrr. But thanks so much for the tip on WF candies. I am ready to return just for those delicacies. 🙂

We did have to give up certain luxuries to live here in the peaceful countryside, and wonderful shopping is a big thing missing from this version of Camelot. You are a “lucky duck” to have WF right down the street from you Nancy. 🙂

Whoa! I never knew Vitamin B complex could have any negative implications! Thought it was water soluble, etc. I’m glad they found the problem in your blood work.

Yes, you should come out of the wilderness now and leave the holler for “back East.” May I follow you around and see what you see for the camera?

Oh, I forgot to mention lunch at a Thai restaurant near Chico’s! No Thai restaurant where I live either.

Yep – I knew that Rita. But since we all have to eat, might as well make food shopping exciting. 🙂 ~Dor

It was definitely a “great escape” Debbie. I’m so glad you have been there and could relate to some of the things in my blog post. Next time you are “down that way” lemme know o.k.? You might drift off toward my little town too. 🙂

I should clarify my comment, Dor. It was B12 that I was taking too high of a dosage.

Aha – a bagel expert! I remember the wonderful bakery bagels from somewhere in my dim past. Some of the family lived in New Jersey. Yum! 🙂

Apple juice in glass containers? Where did you get them in CA? We may be going there later this year! Guess you can tell what a food nut I am…. always looking for that something special. 🙂

The candies are at T.Joe’s. Their apple/pear tarts are pretty awesome, too. I think their prices are better than WF. Mind you, I eat lots of healthier food, but I do like my treats once a day! 😉

You can’t go wrong with food shopping. I wish I had a girlfriend here who liked to do those types of things — but I love to go to new bookstores and sometimes to spiritual/mystic shops – often they are a combination of whimsical and weird – but highly entertaining! MJ

Great advice and lovely post. … Once the weather improves here and I have a day to spare (Bear’s injury pretty much dictates my schedule right now), I will take your advice and head to Niagara-on-the-Lake (about two hours from home), which is my favourite day trip involving food … and wine. 😊

Yes! Go for it Dorothy…. but nurture yourself and Bear first. 🙂

Fortunately, I can walk to our Whole Foods and a gourmet food market, and Trader Joe’s is only a mile and a half away. Food shopping at those three places is always a pleasure for me. I enjoyed my vicarious trip through your “neighborhood.”

A wonderful virtual tour, Dor. We have a Trader Joes nearby, but I would surely drive an hour to visit one 😉 Their store brands are so good, and there is always something interesting to try. Today they had a new “power 7” fruit juice full of dark and sweet anti-oxidant laden wonders. If you see it next time, you might like it. It would be a great mixer, but I just had it straight from the bottle 😉 Thank you for the warm photos of C’ville. Best wishes, WG
