My BigFoot “Expert Doctor” is in Charlottesville, Virginia.
It’s about an hour and a half drive over the legendary Afton Mountain.
And even on a clear day you can be confronted with fog.
There are lights embedded in the roadway but it still feels treacherous.
And it may not actually be fog, but the signs say so. Last time we went “over the hill” we could see a low lying cloud enshrouding the roadway, and then drove right into it.
What a thrill it is to creep along and wonder how bad it could get and would we careen over the edge?
Can you tell I am a worrier?
We have survived the winter with several visits over Afton Mountain and actually this was the first time to experience fog.
From Virginia Living: “The drop-dead gorgeous scenery disappears when clouds blanket the mountain. Fog and ice make for a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) has addressed safety by installing expensive airport runway lights along the 64 roadway to guide motorists…”
sounds scary.

Foggy driving can be treacherous. Glad you didn’t worry yourself too much, Dor. 🙂 Love your photos.

Fog is one of the things I hated when in England is because my late husband and son had to travel along the motorway to get to where they worked. There were always bad motor accidents so I was glad when they returned home safe. Dora I do hope your doctor gets your foot problem resolved soon….and once and forever. Take care.

That is impressive fog! And to think you had to drag your big foot through it!

Have driven that pass many, many times and experienced the daylight to blackness that you write about. Quite a strange feeling to go from that breath-taking view into a black hole.

Sounds beautiful when it’s not foggy. How is bigfoot?

The only thing worst than fog is fog at night… not fun at all!

The title sounds like a toe-tappin’ bluegrass song.

I’ve never heard of such a thing — runway lights. It’s certainly a good idea. Fog and heavy snow don’t appeal to me at all when I’m driving, and adding a mountain to the mix makes it even less appealing. I do have a little ditty for your next foggy trip — I think you know the tune.
“The pair went over the mountain, the pair went over the mountain, the pair went over the mountain, to see what they could see.”
“The fog surrounding the mountain, the fog surrounding the mountain, the fog surrounding the mountain was all that they could see!”

Thank you Rita! The dr we saw “over the mountain” didn’t have much to add. “Stay in the boot and wait for ankle to heal or collapse.” We are going to Baltimore in April to some other experts for a 2nd opinion on how to heal instead of wait. 🙂

Bigfoot is still a problem but now have a definitive diagnosis. It’s a dead bone that has possibility of rejuvenating. Hence he boot for indefinite period.

I do love the little ditty shoreacres! And yes, they are like runway lights on Afton Mountain. At least you can see the edges of the road that way.
