Random Randoms from Virginia
It was the week that was.
It was the week we found a mushroom growing in Bill’s den.
And it started with a Plumber who repaired a leaky pipe inside the wall and then found mold growing under the house.
And that led to a Carpenter who removed a large area of carpet and subflooring.
And that led to an Insurance Adjuster who found more mold in the adjoining bathroom.
And that led to a Mold Expert who verified the mold spread.
And so the Carpenter returned to tear up and replace the affected bathroom floor.
And all of that led to a Painter who repainted the den,
which led to a Cleaning Service coming tomorrow to tackle embedded sawdust.
And somehow in this week that was, the den and the bathroom are REPAIRED and hopefully MOLD FREE!
But we are still not done. Must now find a carpet to replace the chopped up remains.
And that will lead to a Carpet Installer to begin the new week ahead.
What we have learned from our visiting Mold Expert:
Bleach does not kill mold. It used to but it doesn’t any more.
From http://www.maids.com “To kill mold: Pour 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Saturate the moldy surface completely and leave it to sit for ten minutes. Next, scrub the area to remove all of the mold and mold stains. And finally, wipe the surface down to remove residual mold and spores.”
Wow, what a week you’ve had…

The beginning sounds kind of like “dem bones” (Knee bone connected to the thigh bone Thigh bone connected to the hip bone Hip bone connected to the back bone)
I didn’t know bleach no longer killed mold. I didn’t want to use bleach in my mom’s basement because of the fumes so I used a mix of white ACV and tea tree essential oil. I had heard hydrogen peroxide works but I haven’t tried it for that purpose.

Hopefully the worst is behind you, Dor. Thanks for the tip about killing mold. I always thought bleach was sufficient.

What an upheaval Dora, but then again these things usually are. I also thought that bleach cured mold so thanks for this new tip. Hope all goes well with whatever comes next.

Mercy, it HAS been a week for you! Hmm, I wonder why bleach doesn’t kill mold anymore?? I will have to remember your hydrogen peroxide tip.

That is a lot of work for a mushroom. Hopefully there are no health issues.

A nerve wracking week for sure Dianna, that turned out well (at least to this point). Unfortunately, there are never any guarantees.

I am now a converted and dedicated fan of hydrogen peroxide and even use it to wash down kitchen counters, etc.

We are seeing the end of the tunnel Jill – down to replacing the rug. Hurrah! I hope never to see another mushroom growing in my house. 🙂

I think/hope we are in the final phases of this upheaval Rita. Hope to replace the carpet in there soon now. Hurrah! 🙂

The Mold expert said that about bleach, but said he doesn’t know why it doesn’t work anymore. Maybe the bleach product formula has changed? Just guessing.

Oh you poor thing :(. Look on the bright side though – you had insurance and soon you will have fresh paint, new carpet, and no more mushrooms :).

Oh, dear, I can image it was chaos central at your house this week. At least it got repaired quickly, some folks have to wait ages for work to be done!

That’s probably it. Bleach may be watered down too much any more because of regulations or something. Go figure.

NOOOOOO! NOOOOOO! Bleach is my friend. I always thought that was the second line of defense against anything spore-y. (First being dry heat). Well, I have to say you’ve turned it around quickly. What a trooper you are! Thanks for the update and new education on spore removal.

I hope you managed to get rid of all the mold. When I moved to the States, I was surprised to hear that mold was dangerous. At one time when I was growing up, we would have a lot of mold around and no one fell ill. I guess different mold affects people differently. All the best,

Whew, this sounds awful. I’m exhausted just reading the list of all the people you’ve had working on this.

So sorry you’re dealing with the nightmare that is mold and that you had to go through so many steps. Maybe next time-if there is one, you can hire a company like Belfor Disaster Recovery/Rescue that would do it all in one fell swoop! Let’s hope that doesn’t happen though!

Thanks Zambian Lady! I too grew up in a moldy environment (South Florida). No one thought of mold as the issue but I had asthma until we left Florida. Hmmmm.

Ditto Sheryl. I am also exhausted and it’s still not quite over…. now comes the new flooring estimator and installer, etc.

Thank you Kim. I like the “one fell swoop” idea for our next disaster. We did start with such a company in the area, but they recommended calling a plumber first and of course that led to all the other calls.

Oh dear! Mold is no fun. It sounds like you’re getting it under control, though. My daughter up in Portland, Oregon, has had some mold challenges this year. I guess none of us are safe!

That is what I was wondering. Maybe like other bacteria and viruses, molds are getting more resilient. Terrible thought.
