Daily Prompt: Mouths Wide Shut
Are you a picky eater?
Share some of your favorite food quirks with us
(the more exotic, the better!).
I am an unbiased food lover because if it’s edible, I will eat it.
However……
This Daily Prompt prompted me to analyze some odd habits:
- I won’t eat mushy stuff like mashed bananas. Wonder what to do when I’m old with no teeth
- I will not eat most of the white part of an egg because it’s sort of mushy and slimy unless the egg is scrambled or in an omelet. but even then, if there is any white stuff showing, I will leave that portion untouched.
- I will not eat Okra at all because it is slimy, mushy, and dribbly. It used to dribble down my father’s chin, so I never liked the looks of it.
- I will not drink milk unless it is little sips of goat’s milk. Even on cereal the whole effect is “mushy” right? Mom used to trick me by adding chocolate to cow’s milk or offering chocolate pudding but that never really worked. I still hate milk and now convinced I ‘m lactose intolerant.
- I am against smoothies because they are sort of mushy you know, and you can’t pick out the different fruits.
Like I said, “I am an unbiased food lover and if it’s edible I will eat it.”
P.S. My husband may have been attracted because of our unbiased love of all food. He will not eat cheese in any way except on pizza.
everyone’s got their thing…and I often think it comes from how you were raised. I haaate porkchops because I always remember them being steamed, gray chewy things my mother made. But I know if cooked well, maybe I could change my mind…

Ew, mushy stuff, no can do. I can’t stand the slimy, seedy middle goo of a tomato. And I agree okra is also slimy, so it doesn’t land on my food radar at all. Milk, yuk. I’ve convinced myself I’m lactose intolerant too although I love cheese, pudding, and ice cream (!!). I don’t really care for smoothies either because I’m just not into drinking my food. (Like you said, what will I do when I’m old with no teeth????)

I hate okra too. Yuch on slimy. But mainy, I will not eat rubbery food. That texture really puts me off. I won’t eat: mushrooms, calamari, clams – or even jello.

My dear friend, please take extra special care to never break your jaw!!!! Because, other than the okra, I’ve pretty much been making ONLY what is on your list for my daughter. If I never see another smoothie……UGH.

When we finally do get together Barbara, let’s have a pact to ingest only “hard” food!

I love cheese, pudding and ice cream too (well, maybe not pudding so much). Are you sure you are not my secret twin?

Thanks for visiting my blog Maisa! And I do agree about food quirks coming from how you were raised.

Okra is ok if it’s in soup and not cooked to death. Otherwise it doesn’t taste…like eggplant. Just hosted my 8 year old granddaughters. Yikes! One lived on grilled cheese and the other won’t eat cheese unless it’s on pizza. They both eat clams (yuk!) and on and on. Feeding a family must be challenging these days. My mother’s version was to make what she wanted. If we didn’t eat, we could starve. Seemed to work for her.

I too am texture biased. I love food and eat most anything but will not eat coconut (altho I like recipes with coconut milk) or okra because of their textures. We all have a little weirdness don’t we. No cheese would literally starve me to death!

I’m with you on okra! When hubby makes cereal, he lets it “sog.” I like mine with a bit of crunch. I like eggs, period.

I’ve never had Okra that wasn’t fried and I liked that 🙂 But I’m with you on milk – gagaroonie. However I do put it in my coffee – that’s it.
Fun post!

From emjay in comments, I have a new word to describe mushy things. So referring to your hubby’s cereal sog I will say “gagaroonie!” 🙂

Weirdness-es certainly do pop up in the area of food consumption. Cooking for two when one will not eat cheese is a lifelong challenge.

I like your mother’s version best but I know all about trying to please the next generation. One of my grandgirls was notorious for choosing everything white. She would have mashed potatoes, french fries, and rice, macaroni and cheese, all on one plate. Even now, as a teen, she still chooses the white stuff.
Horrible! 🙂

My brother was the same but when he turned 50 he started eating a bit of cheese much to my sister-in-law’s relief. Maybe yours will change his mind too 🙂

What a great subject for a post, nothing gets people going more than food (except maybe politics!). Texture is definitely a biggie. Okra heads the list to be sure. 🙂
