I went camera walking with Pal (my camera) this week. Isn’t it amazing what you see on foot and how different the same old world looks from a slower and lower perspective?
Chilhowie brick sidewalks line the streets of Lexington, Virginia and always charm me with their unusual patterns. They are important icons of the two universities – Washington and Lee and the Virginia Military Institute. The odd bricks, popular 100 years ago, were made in Chilhowie, Virginia and they have become a symbol of the Lexington community.
The sidewalks lead to enchanting fences and gateways to mysterious places. If it were not trespassing I would amble along and drift in there to sit in the shade and daydream. If they don’t want me to loiter, why do they leave their gate open and entice passersby with that lovely view?
Across the street there are the grand homes I usually admire for a few seconds driving into town. Several are for sale, including a brand new one. Can you guess which one it is?
Lovely stately homes. The last one looks the newer, but the first is the one for sale, right?

A lovely post, Dor. Lexington is one of my favorite Virginia towns. How could it not be? It’s got a bit of everything, doesn’t it? I didn’t know about the Chilhowie bricks which I find so interesting. Thank you!

Love all three places, but I’m going to guess the last one is brand new one. What a beautiful neighborhood to go walking in. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

You miss so much driving everywhere. Walking is a great way to see things/ is it the white house with the columns that is for sale, with the rather discreet sign out front? I think I’d like the place with that inviting looking garden best.

I would guess the second house, with the balcony and tower, is the new one.

What a charming walkway and that path beyond the gate is very enticing. I’ve always loved a brick road, its sound and looks. But I’ll bet it plays havoc with a car’s alignment. Thank you, Dora, for sharing these lovely views.

Lexington is definitely a lovely little city for walking and thinking of the people who walked there before you.

And you would be right Batwoman! Actually I am the one who is mistaken because I have just learned (and should have remembered) that it is a restored house. But the work was such that it looked totally brand new when completed. I believe it was a church.

Yes, the white house with the columns is for sale, as well as the other big one, but not the one with the garden gate. You have great taste! 🙂

You have guessed right Mary except for my mistake that the last photo is of a restored house/church Circa 1891. It looks brand new to me too because as they say, “it was impeccably restored.”

Thanks Barbara. You will definitely have to come back to Lexington for a visit – with me! The Chilhowie bricks are all over downtown Lexington on the sidewalks and many people fashion jewelry from their images – like earrings and things that are for sale around town.

Both of the big houses are for sale Eliza, but I must apologize for my error in tagging one as “new.” Actually the last one that looks newer to you too was impeccably restored just last year. It is Circa 1891. 7,000 square feet. 5 Bedrooms, 6 Full Baths, 2 Half-Baths. Space for offices, studio, guests. $1,295,999! It looks so new that I thought it was new. A “rush to judgement.”

I had actually thought we might go down to see my parents again this year when they go to South Carolina, but then we had about $2,700 in car repairs, so that killled that idea :(.
