Sailing Along

We were drifting along a river and the journey was quiet and smooth (if you don’t count the Locks the first night).

There is something surreal and other-worldly about sailing down a river past story book villages.

Great River View

I was expecting to see the worn out industrial sides of German towns like from a bus or a train in the U.S.  But we must have passed those city undersides at night because the views were of the never-to-be-forgotten other-worldly variety.House View from Ship

There was a song written in 1912 entitled “Moonlight Bay” often sung in a Barbershop Quartet style.  It  was one of a number of early 20th century songs used as titles for musical films made by Doris Day in the late 1940s and 50s.

The Chorus of that song kept going through my head as we made our way:

We were sailing along

On Moonlight Bay

We could hear the voices ringing

They seemed to say:

“You have stolen her heart”

“Now don’t go ‘way!”

As we sang Love’s Old Sweet Song

On Moonlight Bay

My Snowy World

I went for a walk today to see the melting.  Birds and deer and turkey were all happily hunting for the sustenance that disappeared the day before. It was a snowy world now rapidly disappearing with the advent of the sun.  In some places the snow lingers, and even though I will be delighted to see it all go,  it still outlines my world with gallant touches of glamour.

WATCH: Apple rolls out racially, sexually diverse emoticons

Posted February 23, 2015 by CNNWIRE

“ NEW YORK — Emojis are finally getting more diverse. In Apple’s next update of emoji icons, a number of the tiny cartoon people are now available in six different skin tones. The male and female faces, as well as thumbs up/thumbs down icons, will be available in the different colors. Other people emoji, such as princesses and construction workers, will also get more diverse options. Tapping and holding on an emoji person will bring up the new skin-tone variations. The diverse people are just some of the 300 new emojis included in the latest developer version of iOS 8.3. The new icons won’t be available to the public until the update is released later this year.”

Remember  when we were taught Cursive writing?  Well now it’s mostly block printing or texting. Words still work, but the prediction is that we will soon be non-word-texting with only emoticons to convey meanings.   Imagine the freedom of eradicating words from human communication!  You will be able to string several instant cartoon images together to form  sentences!

But now the march for progress is reversing course.    I remember screaming  into my family’s land wired telephone.  It was the only way to be heard “long distance.”  Now folks are screaming into their wire-less cell phones.   “Can you hear me NOW?”

It is all part of the March Backward.
