Elsa, our quirky rescue dog is terrified of loud noises. She is convinced the sky must be falling and she is the target.
It is thundering as I try to describe this shaking, shivering fur ball who is hiding in the well of my desk. At least it is walled on two sides and make it three with the wall behind, and the desk top makes for an igloo or cave-like spot. Then there is the added comfort of my knees for human reassurance.
I only hope there will be good weather next week during my hip surgery. There are no worries over hospital equipment or expertise, but the weather?
The weather can make or break Elsa while I am away.
But believe it or not, our son and daughter-in-law are traveling thousands of miles to be here – yep – for Elsa! The paranoid pup does truly love our son but I exaggerate a little. Corky and Emmy are actually coming to help wherever they see a need. How wonderful is that?
The skies are quieter now and so is Elsa.
The storm has passed and she is in her safe place.
Poor Elsa, our Wren sympathizes, she is none too fond of thunderstorms herself. Her hiding spot is the master bedroom closet! š

Ahhh, I wish I could hug her and tell her it will be alright! Good luck to you on your surgery.

Poor little girl. Thunderstorms and fireworks are so scary for some animals.
I’m glad that your son and daughter in law will be there to help out while you recover.

We’ll be thinking of you next week and hoping both you and Elsa will feel safe and comfortable.

She’s such a beautiful dog. I thought at first you were going to mention fireworks; several of my friends have pups who spent a good portion of the holiday hiding from those. Best of luck with your surgery. I’m glad the cavalry is coming!

Hi Dora, Koko is exactly the same Hates loud noises, thunder storms and squeezes underneath the tiniest of spaces. The uncanny part about Koko is that he can hear a thunder storm before we do or anywhere near us,so when he darts to the nearest place to hide we know what’s coming. Greece uses fireworks to celebrate anything and that’s a nightmare for poor Koko. I often wonder if this is a trait among rescue dogs. maybe from previous ill treatment.

I remember my dog would run and hide underneath my bed during a thunderstorm. And we had some storm pass through that were frightening, even for us humans and I think I would have happily joined my dog under the bed if there’d been room for me.

We are spread out here in rural Virginia so fireworks are not usually an issue. Tonight’s thunderstorm was sufficient.

We do suspect Elsa has suffered abuse in some previous homes. She even has a rib that protrudes and continues to flinch when stroked.

Ditto. I have even been known to hideout in the closet, along with the dog for an excuse of course! š
