It has been a very long year – well, almost a year – of high hopes and plans to get the much ballyhooed Covid-19 vaccination. Bill and I have followed all the rules and pretty much hunkered down and separated from family and friends.
And since I am still having trouble walking with a BigFoot that moved to the other foot and then from those two feet to the knees and then to my right hip, Bill is the “outside man” for shopping and errands and I am the “inside woman” with the chores I can handle.
We both decided months ago that we would get the vaccine ASAP! “We will be at the top of the list,” we thought, “because we are over 65!”
That was before a doctor I admire warned that if I was waiting for a vaccine, it would be a long wait. He was sure all the healthy young people would get it first. It made no sense to him but that is what he believed. “And why should I get it before you do when you are at the most risk from dying?” he asked.
Now it looks like we are actually closing in on qualifying for the arm jabs that hopefully will ward off death.
It sounds like vaccination appointments will be coming up over the next two weeks in our Central Shenandoah Health District in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Yes!
Finally there are notices that we are moving into Phase 1b in our specific district!
So why am I plagued with ongoing questions?
- Is this cause for hope and celebration?
I have a more “believe it when I see it” attitude.
- Will we really get the first shot?
- And will we really then get the second one?
Somehow I am not sure of the value of our lives.
- Will there be enough left for us after the masses of younger Essentials?
- Will we have bad reactions?
- How long will the protection last?
- Will we have to get re-vaccinated every year?
- Would it be better to wait for the one dose vaccine?
We are on the brink of beating the horrible virus that took over so many lives. At least that is what the experts keep telling us.
When we have passed the finish line and all of us have won the race for immunity, I will try to write another blog post in a real celebration for all the questions answered and all the lives saved.
My wife just got notified that she has an “Appointment Ticket” to get the vaccine – meaning she can schedule an appointment when there’s enough vaccine locally. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. We’re almost there.

It seems that the vaccine is yet another subject to divide us. Hubby and I (at this point) are leaning toward not getting it. How much testing was done??? There just hasn’t been enough time to know about long-lasting side effects. I just pray that we’ll all get through this soon. Wishing you the best!

Oh Dor, just be your usual positive self. The vaccine will be available for you and you will both survive the virus.Sorry to hear that BigFoot has been on the move. Take care my other sister. His from here to there.

It is such sweet comfort to have a sister/friend like you from a faraway land. Thankyou!

Bill and I have gone round and round about this decision too. Still wondering if we will really do it.

Are we winning this war on the new World Plague? I used to be fascinated by books on The Plague. Had no idea I would be part of one.

My husband is scheduled for Tuesday. I’m a little younger so I don’t qualify yet but I intend to get it when I can. I have been vaccinated against many other diseases without ill effects other than maybe a sore arm. I don’t want to overthink it. If it keeps me healthy, I’ll be happy. If I need a booster next year, I’ll worry about it then.

Hi Dora I was skeptical about having the vaccine as well thinking it hadn’t been tested long enough, until my son brought my notice to the fact that all countries are pulling together to produce the vaccine, plus more advanced technology and understanding of virus’s Also in the past it had to be done in stages because of waiting for funds to carry on,this is what took the time. I have my vaccine next Tuesday 19th and the second one on 9th Feb will let you know how I get on..Have faith and stay safe Dora.

I am on the side of getting it. I mean the vaccine …. not the virus. But the waiting is stressful. The reaction can differ from person to person.
It is helpful to hear/read the same from others. I don’t like to hear/read the same, but there is no ‘you or them’ about this. We are all in together.

There also seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there about the vaccine (just like the virus), so we find it hard to know what to believe.

Hang in there sorry you have been trapped at home it has to be depressing even though you love your home and now being winter and cold unless you are into winter sports no need to put yourself in harms way. Sit by your window overlooking the porch and watch the wildlife soon it will be time for iced tea on the porch β€ I looked for your number and could not find it π¦ mine is 603-300-0064 if you want to gab π xo

I hope you end up getting the vaccine sooner than later and that you don’t have to wait a long time. We are a bit younger (63 and 64) so will have to wait until probably April or May before we get our opportunity. But waiting can be hard.

Getting the ‘jab’ is an easy decision for some and a hard one for others! I’m not inclined to be the first in line for my age group when it is offered, but where I live I expect it will be a few months or more before I have to make a decision. That gives me and my Doctor time to assess whether it is a good choice for me or not.

Glad you will be in line for vaccinations soon! Husband and I have stayed in mostly too but will get the shots when we can get an appointment. I don’t want to wait in a car for hours to get them. There should be a better way. It seems many older people are rushing out to get them. Yes, there are unknowns but we will take the shots when we can. Things can’t be worse than then are now. Stay well a little longer!

You have the right idea. Bill and I are waiting for the right time and for the vaccines to be in our little rural area of Virginia.

I sometimes wish we could wait for the one dose vaccine. Other times I wish we could just get all these vaccinations over with so we can think forward again. Mostly we hurry up and wait.

So great to talk to you yesterday. We covered a lot of territory and I am mostly happy that you are doing well and generating friends and laughter. You are very special and deserve to feel good.

We are constantly confused here. One day the vaccine is plentiful, the next scarce. And one day we are in the preferred list and then we’re not. One day we will undoubtedly get the vaccine.

I know what you mean about sharing our experiences during this modern day plague. It helps to know others are just as confused as we are. There doesn’t seem to be a right path toward immunity so we wait to do as we are told. When they tell us the vaccine is here, we will join the lines.

Hurrah! I am so glad you are up for the vaccine – TOMORROW! Wish it were so here I suppose our rural small town community is the reason for delays…. problems with refrigeration maybe and not enough population to categorize us easily. We do have a few nursing homes and the death rates are rising but that does not seem to make us priority places. Good luck with that innoculation. Lemme know how it goes.

Ditto Kate… Bill and I will get the shots ASAP but the vaccine is not even in our area yet. The waiting is the painful part. Good luck to your husband tomorrow. Will he have the shot at the doctor’s office or in a gymnasium?

Our local hospital has an auditorium and I think that’s where they get them.

Looks like I am booked for the shot next week…. the information came in through my doctor. The problem is Bill goes to a different dr so he is still waiting.

Glad you had the vaccine Dora and Bill will get his too that’s good. John doesn’t have his yet as he is waiting for his age group i.e. 80’s and over as there is seven years difference between us. Of course he tells everyone he is my Toy Boy. Stay safe both.

They don’t come through docs here at all. It’s either the hospital or pharmacies and the number of appointments is small especially at the pharmacies.

And I will be happy to read your blog post that is a celebration for this being over! Here Tier 1 and Tier 2 (over 65) are supposed to get shots first but I think it has been hit and miss as we have had to reach out to find a place giving them. Some were waiting in line in their cars overnight and people would drive miles out of there area if vaccines were available. Husband and I thought we would be on a waiting list for much long. We were ok because we don’t get out much. Big Foot seems to have mutated, Dora. Take care and stay well. Cheers!

Thankyou for noticing BigFoot’s mutation! And for sharing your frustration with the Covid vaccine distribution. I have had my first shot but Bill is still floundering around trying to get his. Virginia has been deemed a failure re its distribution policies and trying a new one today. We too are o.k. because we manage to stay isolated if you don’t count Bill’s trips to the grocery store. You stay well too! And keep on blogging…….
