I was waiting to be called in to see the doctor re BigFoot (now on the opposite foot!) Feeling sorry for myself too, out in public in the middle of a pandemic, masked among other anonymously masked people.
On top of the doom and gloom mood I was in, it was raining hard and I wasn’t feeling a bit cozy even though I was dry.
Then a beautifully dressed woman came in. She was maybe in her 60’s. And with her was a little stooped man, also impeccably dressed. He looked like an English magazine ad for what to wear to look prosperously elegant.
“What an interesting duo,” I thought.
They went to the reception counter where the little man was asked his birth date. Around here in Virginia’s medical communities we seem to be known more for our birthdates than for our names. Anyway, here was the little man’s answer:
“July 12, 1918 – I have been around for awhile.”
That makes him 102 years old!
And then he walked by me, looked down and said, “Good morning.” It was 2PM in the afternoon but so what? And I replied “Good morning to you.”
That encounter literally made my day, cheered me out of my doldrums and gave me hope. I have never met a 102 year old person, have you? What a wonder that was. And I could tell he must have been and probably still is great fun.
A people person. A man who lives for rainbows.
A man who is young at heart.
What a wonderful, uplifting encounter! Makes me smile.

Thanks so much for this great little story. It made me smile. It also reminded me of my parents. Dad died at 101 and Mom died 11 months later, at 102. When asked, on their last anniversary (when they had been married for 75 years) how long they had been married, Dad said, “Not long enough.”

Love this story! Still young at heart at 102. May we all be so… May the rainbows come out over any doom and gloom and fill our hearts with hope and appreciation.

Wouldn’t it be great if we all had his young at heart attitude no matter what our age is? What an uplifting post, Dor. I can see why it cheered you that day. 🙂

I never met anyone that old either and there I was lucky enough to catch some of his humor and joy in his own life at 102.

What a lucky girl you are to have had such parents! And they obviously had that same sense of humor that can carry us through life smiling.

It was a song I used to love and it seemed just right for this chance encounter with a fellow who really is young at heart.

What a great story. I love it! and you know I’ve just started saying “good morning” all the time. Way too much work to figure out what time it is and translate to a greeting.

I tour the DelMarVa with an 88 YO male on occasion. It’s kind of like Elder Care.Prior to Covid’s arrival it was two days a week. We’ve just resumed on Fridays to give his other half a chance to socialize in the garden for a Bring your own Sandwich lunch with the girls. They rotate gardens, decks, porches and the like.
My companion, “What looks good to you on the menu?” I let him know what I’m getting and he says”the cheeseburger looks good.” It always looks good and most always he gets the cheeseburger. We order, chit chat about nothing in particular and my buddy says “what’s you thinking for lunch?” And so goes my day on Delmarva. Good Morning Donna! 🙂 If you have never, you must see “50 First Dates”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_First_Dates
