Today is downright cold. “Sweater Weather,” my Mom called it. In Florida where I grew up Autumn announced its arrival with a delightfully cool breeze that offered blessed relief from Summer heat. We knew more of that was coming and we could not wait to greet the season.
Virginia is different. Things can and do change overnight. Winter’s warnings here are loud, clear and insistent. Last night the warning came with a breeze too cold to leave the windows open and a sudden need to cover up.
Yes, summer tops look strangely out of place in the closet now and shorts, bathing suit and sun hats are ready for wistful hibernation. I should have been prepared for this since the little market down the road has been showcasing mums and pumpkins for many days now. And the internet is featuring autumn decor and Halloween.
Even recipes emerge that I haven’t even thought of all Summer. I suddenly want to make more stews and hearty meals. I am famous for simple, easy, recipes that taste like they took alot of work. Here’s a good one for Old Fashioned Meatloaf with a great tangy twist.
DOR’S BARBECUED MEAT LOAF
1 ½ pounds ground beef
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 onion, finely chopped
1 egg, beaten
1 ½ teaspoons salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 15-16 oz. can of tomato sauce, divided
½ cup water
3 tablespoons vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Combine first 6 ingredients in a large mixer bowl; add ½ can of tomato sauce, mixing well. Place mixture in a 10x6x1-inch baking dish, and shape into a loaf. Combine remaining tomato sauce and remaining ingredients in a small mixing bowl and pour over loaf. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until done, basting often. Yield: 8 servings.
Same here. I’m yearning for chili or stew. Maybe even soup!

Your vision of autumn is lovely! We won’t have sweater weather for some time but it is down from the high 90s so that is cooler for us. You can’t beat a good meat loaf and your recipe looks good! Happy fall!

Your meatloaf recipe is similar to mine – I love the taste of added Worcestershire sauce. And coincidentally, I made it last night! When it gets cold, I crave hot dishes and more carbs… fall makes for good eating!

I was surprised yesterday at the weather. Today it’s pouring and I just can’t get warm! The meatloaf recipe sounds really good!

Our Fundraiser full of Fall Color arrives Saturday morning you are right our forecast is calling for very chilly weather and I still have Bluebirds, Catbirds and Hummingbirds here. I was sleeveless today shoveling away working up a sweat but in the evenings it is cool 0 degree days hopefully long gone.
I make an award winning meatloaf Ron says . I served him this meal with mashed potatoes and buttered corn when we first saw each other after 35 years apart this past Labor Day. He never left lol now sell I should sell it. I have everything you do to start with except your last 5 ingredients and I cook mine with some milk and other seasonings and pack it all into a loaf pan and cook for just over and hour 🙂
I was just telling him it was time for Chili and stews and roasted turkey with all the fixings it not only fills our belly but keeps the home warm without turning on the furnace it is just enough to take the chill out of this bungalow.

When we awoke to 49f the other day, Mary Agnes pulled a couple of jars of chicken stock out, a box of Anne’s Old Fashion Flat Dumplings, (we call them Slicks,) and we had Chicken and Dumplings. I’ve saved your recipe.

It’s ‘sweater weather’ up here in Pennsylvania too! I was just thinking today that I need to start putting the summer clothes away. On another note, your recipe for meatloaf sounds yummy! I’ll have to try it to add some zip to my boring old meatloaf recipe

You are so welcome Kathy. With a frost warning in the works you must be feeling pretty smug having all that wood cut and ready. You will be warm and toasty.

Winter’s on its merry way and I know what you mean about struggling to get warm.

It must be something in our primitive genes that prompts the urge for more calories and carbs to prepare for cold, lean times.

Happy Fall to you too even though it will take a bit more time to arrive in your “neck o the woods.”

Yep… we had stew last night but I must not be a good soup maker. Bill will never eat mine but will order it in any restaurant. Go figure.

How odd. Soup isn’t hard to make and it’s always tasty unless someone puts odd spices in it. That’s the reason I rarely order when I’m out.
