It has been over 30 years since first we came to this bit of Camelot in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. There was nothing here but we camped out on the land and dreamed of the perfect house to shelter us right into old age.

A Home for Living
All on one level with an attached two car garage we have given thanks many times for the cover during rain or sleet or snow. It is a modest house designed by Bill, that has bent with the years to accommodate many changes. In the beginning my mother came to live with us for several years, then Bill’s sister moved to the area and spent every weekend here. My brother and Sister-in-law and kids came too, and long time friends returned and returned. Our son came early on, married, and then grandchildren arrived, and we had dogs and horses and a garden and we grew along with the landscape and we changed too along with the house that accommodated and sheltered us all.
There are rooms with a view, mostly of the Blue Ridge Mountains which really do look blue sometimes. Other rooms look out upon our green green world and what I call the Forest Primeval.
Bedrooms have their own thermostats for individual heat control in case we lose power. But there is a big wood stove which heats the house so efficiently that I sometimes have to open windows in the middle of a blizzard.

Even though I always see this home as almost perfect, we began some upgrades in 2018. A big change was the addition of a “Whole House Generator.” It is still hard to imagine we no longer need candles. Oddly enough I still have a major stash of jarred candles “just in case.” But the generator keeps working its magic and we haven’t had to use a candle yet (except to add romance of course).
In addition to the magical generator, we upgraded the kitchen with a quartz countertop that feels cool and looks so cool that I think I am working in a brand new place. I love the view of the mountains from the kitchen too.

Nope, we do not wish to sell the house! And this is not a pre-prepared advertisement. I have simply run out of adventurous things to blog about, and my self imposed isolation means you get a little tour of Camelot. Also, between you and me, I am practising using the new WordPress block editor format. What do you think?
And a beautiful home it is to go with the beautiful people in it ā¤ļø. Also, Iām very impressed with your use of the new WordPress block editor format!!

Very nice updates, Dor. I need to do a few of those myself, but not until the dam-panic is over. š
I find the new block editor not to my liking! I can’t find short-link buttons and can’t figure out the media aspect. I am not all that tech-savvy. I just wish they’d leave it alone. But they just drag us kicking and screaming into every new change and eventually, we succumb. š

Thanks for the pioneer update. I have played with the Block on WordPress but do not like it. Seems hard to delete something.

I want a wood stove like that. Looks like you got the block editor working just fine.

You have an ideal forever place!
We got a generator too. It isn’t big enough for the whole house, but will automatically kick on and run the furnace and the refrigerator and a few lights. If the power is supposed to be off for a longer time, we do have a whole house diesel generator – a bit more work to get going, but would be vital if it was the middle of winter and we were going to be cut off from the world in a snow storm for a few days!

Your home is lovely, it sounds like it suits you down to the ground and the scenery is wonderful. You did a pretty good job with the block editor too.

What a perfect spot of paradise! It’s amazing what a kitchen upgrade can do. I commend you for using the new editor. I, on the other hand, have avoided it so far. One day it just won’t work and then I’ll move to the new one. I had tried it early on and it was a nightmare. Hopefully they have corrected some of the bugs.

WOW ! 30 years it’s obvious you have been and still are happy there Dora. I know what you mean about the wood burner, we have one and they are very efficient and I agree they can get a little too hot until you pass the test in regulating them. So cosy too. Love your kitchen. Stay happy and safe both !

Your upgraded kitchen is lovely, though I have a warm spot in my heart for your old kitchen. I think that I have formica in my kitchen that is identical to your old formica. š

I am glad you are learning to use the new block editor form–guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! (I am not referring to you as an old dog, that was kind of intended for me and all of us over age 50. What a learning curve…) It is so nice to see the inside of your house and to learn more about your life history in Camelot. Your two-car attached garage sounds wonderful and I am a little envious. We have a garage but it’s always filled with Barry’s projects. Luckily the car has an automatic starter and can warm up in the winter! Again, this was really nice to read.

Thanks Kathy! I am so glad you enjoyed this writeup. Your upwoods living sounds a bit like our lifestyle here what with the need to cut and store wood. We always did that until now with the automatic generator thing. What luxury after 30+ years!

You have said it in a nutshell Emjay! Thanks. š

I loved the old kitchen too and hesitated to change anything. The countertop was fine except for a nick in one place and the edges getting frayed. If you have the same formica, I would say you have great taste! š

Thanks Rita. Yes, 30 years sounds like forever but then we have been married 61 years and that really is forever. The house is still so lovely and such a happy place to live. Odd that you too have a “wood burner.” I wish you were closer. I just know we we would be good friends.

I too hated the new block editor Kate. In fact, I called my son to help me go back to the Classic Version since I seemed to be stuck in the new one. After hours of trying he gave me a crash course in how to use the block editor and it began to make some sense. If it weren’t for him, I know I would have quit blogging period.

Sounds like you have covered most everything for power outages. As we got older, starting up the little generator got harder and harder. Now the new system is so luxurious we just sit here and watch the house continue as if nothing happened when the power goes off. I call it one of the few benefits of old age.

Thankyou Andrew! I actually got to like the big ugly wood stove and gave it an honored place in the living room. Still working on the block editor thing but it was my son who provided the incentive and the navigation tips.

I agree with you about the confusing new block editor on wordpress. Our son helped me to begin navigating. I still don’t understand things but hoping it will get easier. Son says, this new way is designed to provide more control – not less. Wishful thinking in this age of technology.

Thankyou Son! I could never have done it without your clear eyed examples. In fact, as I have mentioned to some of my blogging friends, I know I would have quit blogging altogether rather than cope with the frustration. Love you and thankyou again.

Oh, I so agree with you Eliza! I wish they would just leave our blogging ways alone. But, according to my tech savvy son, this new way will give us all kinds of power and control to make our blogs even easier to navigate! Maybe he is right? I’ll keep trying anyway.

I can’t believe you have kept your blog but never put in any of your great photos! But I am happy for your lovely comments and that you noticed my new WordPress format! Thankyou my ex-blogger friend. Are you finished with the pushups yet?

Hi Dora, Thanks for your nice comment and yes I am sure we would become close friends, we do have some things in common such as the dogs, the wood burner, blogging, etc., By the way I also could not get on with the block editor and my son tried helping me. However that didn’t work because he is in England and trying to tutor me online was no good, but I then remembered I had my blog dashboard in my favourites, clicked onto that and it took me straight to my original classic editor. The Block editor is far too complicated. Since then I have put 8 parts from my final thesis on my blog. I am keeping my fingers crossed though !!! Enjoy your week end..

I am still struggling with the new block editor thing but managed to get the last post out about waiting for surgery. I could not go back and put the photo in the right place by while I was worrying about it, my son moved it from the bottom to the top. He saiid you just click the up arrow. Ha! Easy for him to say. Anywa, I will keep trying but have no idea how I posted the last one. It just happened like by magic.
