Kit the Wit
My oldest best friend’s birthday is coming up tomorrow.
She is an old lady now.
But, I suppose I am too.
Still, every year about this time she is older than I am and that lasts until November.
Kit and I were little children when we first met. She was older than me then too.
She was 12 years old and I was 11.
She wanted to ride my brand new bike and I said, “NO.” Then I changed my mind and we have been best friends forever ever since! That means we went through all the joys of childhood, then all the hopes, dreams and traumas of the teen years, first jobs, dating and marriage, parenthood, and now, finally, the ups, downs and mysteries of aging.
Way back then Kit gave us nicknames. She would be Kit the Wit from that point on and we shortened that to just “Wit.”
And I was Dort the Snort. Not too glamorous but “Snort” stuck (I have a wonderful sense of humor you know! In fact I have other friends who call me “Dork” – imagine?).
People do stare when Wit calls out in a store, “Hey Snort, come and look at this!”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WIT! I am more grateful than ever to have you as my oldest best friend forever. Let’s ignore old age and the pandemic and all the other things that might get in the way and plan to spend the night (just one more night) like we did so long ago.
A good friend is a treasure; I’d rather have 4 quarters than a 100 pennies. Here’s to Kit the Wit! 🙂 MJ

I remember you mentioning this friendship in the past. I think it’s wonderful that you two have had such a long-standing friendship, and the nicknames are GREAT!

Happy birthday to your older friend! Funny how childhood nicknames last. I have one that I call Stinky (we all did) instead of Sue. It is great that you have stayed friends with the years. Cheers!

My Pal Snort – here she is again calling me an ‘Old Lady’. Every single birthday I have to be reminded how much OLDER I am (you would think it was 6+ years rather than 6 months). I can hardly wait until November when she will be my same old age!
It’s now 3:30 a.m. here in Las Vegas, and before settling down for the night, this OLD LADY is going to play the elephant that this ‘YOUNGER’ girlfriend sent her because it’s such a happy feeling watching Mr. Elephant’s pink ears flap up and down while he sings Happy Birthday!
Thank you Snort – You always know how to put a smile on my face.
Love and grateful you are my BFF, Wit

She is a wonderful person, but we are totally opposite personalities. She is and always has been a free spirit, while I have always been a worrier and a follow-the-rules person. In many ways we are good for each other but in other ways we drive each other nuts. Example: She is always 30 minutes late. I am always 30 minutes early. So I have waited an hour on a street corner (naturally fuming) to meet her for lunch!

There is no question there is something special about our growing up together and still the same.

We are so old that in our day there were no slumber parties. We just would decide to spend the night at one of our homes. Kit now lives thousands of miles away so the chances of us spending another night are slim. But you never know. They were good times when we would stay up until 3 AM talking and talking and talking.

Thanks Kathy. And yes, we were and still are a funny pair for sure.

I doubt we will be meeting for some time Rita since Kit lives thousands of miles away and the Covid-19 virus is still so restrictive, expecially for our age group.

Thanks Dianna! It is really a great friendship. I have known Kit longer than I have known my husband!

Actually, we called it a bunkin’ party, even if only one friend spent the night. We’d stay up all night and must have been awful to live with when we went home. How our mothers stood it, I’ll never know.

Wow! You have us beat with a friend from age 4! And how wonderful that you can meet once a year. I haven’t seen Wit in several years as she lives in Las Vegas and so far away.
