An Autumn Leaf Dreaming of Spring
March 9, 2019 by dorannrule

And so it went. Day after day after day I waited.
At first, from my faraway post it might have been an injured red Virginia Cardinal fluttering on a barren branch in a forest now devoid of any leaves.
On closer inspection it was actually a lone leaf fluttering in the breeze.
“It may be the only leaf still clinging to life in the state of Virginia,” I thought.
Then we had 60 mile per hour wind gusts.
“Surely it will release its grasp though this,”
But there it stayed and stays still.
I never see a singular leaf like this even though I look along our roadsides.
Now it is snowing and raining and snowing with a sometimes stiff breeze making for peculiar weather.
And there she is, hanging on
as if dreaming.
She is to be admired – an Autumn leaf dreaming of turning green again for one more chance at life.

Oh, goodness…this reminds me of an O. Henry short story….. I’ll have to research to find the name so you can read it… It’s called The Last Leaf. I remember reading it in school.

Sounds a lot like me, I’m always reluctant to turn over a new leaf.

Beautiful – I’ve often wondered why a few leaves continue to cling to trees long after most have fallen. I assume that there may be a biological explanation, but am clueless about what it might be.

Oh Dor, that is rather a sad tale since we all know in our heart of hearts she doesn’t really have a chance! But we must admire her perseverance – a lesson for us all!

One year, we had a little brave leaf like that that hung on for dear life on a front yard tree. It’s always windy here at our country home, but that leaf wouldn’t give up. I surely like the idea that those tenacious leaves are dreaming about being green once more come spring. 🙂

I looked up The Last Leaf and now recall the O’Henry story. I loved those stories. May start to read them all over again thanks to your inspiration! 🙂

I am still seeing that last leaf hanging on. I wonder if it will make it through all the greening to come.

It is still so strange to see that one leaf in a barren forest! Still there while the daffodils are blooming.

You are so right Tina… a sad tale. On the other hand that last leaf is a tribute to perserverence.

Those poor little leaves (yours and ours) must have their stories.
