Elsa Heard a Noise
Gun Shots, Backfires or Fireworks?
The end of 2018 began with popping noises in the distance. Elsa-the-dog is terrified of popping noises like faraway fireworks. We bought her a “Thundershirt” (meant to wrap around her tummy to create a sense of well being). The problem is we don’t get to it (the shirt) in time.
I suppose hiding your head is a good alternative.
More Cookies?
I started a new tradition this New Year’s Eve to celebrate Year’s End and a new year’s beginning. I baked whipped shortbread cookies. My sweet Canadian friend, Cindy, gave me the recipe for truly melt in your mouth fabulous cookies and I intend to make them every year for New Year’s Eve.
As my dear old Dad was known to say, “Delicious if I do say so myself.”

Old Traditions or Old People?
Every year we replay the tradition of getting together with old friends for:
celebratory drinks at our house,
followed by dinner out,
followed by a movie at our house,
followed by champagne to toast in the New Year.
We aim to finish up at midnight and sometimes we make it. This year, not so much. We were all dozing off by 10:30PM so made our toasts and called it a night.
Something’s wrong here.
End of a Year and The Downtown Lexington Fall of the Ball
This year I hope to urge our friends to have a very late dinner with us in downtown Lexington, Virginia and then proceed to Main Street to hang out and watch the falling of our very own small town ball!
More and more people are doing that even though it only takes about 30 seconds for the shiny thing to fall.
Then maybe 100 balloons float down upon the crowd of maybe 100 folks who are just as ready to cheer and holler as all those revelers in Times Square.
I am awake now and trying to adjust to the end of a full-of-surprises 2018.
Hope your “endings” were fun and your “beginnings” too.
And now wishing you a very Happy New Year!
I enjoyed reading about your end-of-year festivities. John, David, and I made it past midnight amid yawns and stretches. The neighbors stayed until 11, which was about an hour later than other years. We whiled away the time looking at all the photos I saved this year. We quit at midnight and resumed the next night until the exercise was finished. I’m not sure if the year was not long enough or if I took too many photos.

Koko is also terrified of any banging noises such as, guns fireworks, thunder etc. He is so nervous he also trembles . He immediately hides under any table but the smaller the better. He has even squeezed underneath a chest of draws . I think all animals are the same with such noises.

Good idea to look at photos New Year’s Eve and continue on to the next night! 🙂

Thank you Rita! Elsa trembles too and squeezes into very tight spaces…. they have such acute hearing that the popping sounds of fireworks or gunshots must verge on painful.

Oh, poor Elsa! Those cookies look and sound delightful. And finally, regarding New Year’s Eve, it’s kind of amazing that we all (hubby, daughter & me) managed to stay awake this year to ring in the new year. Hope it’s a good one for you and I agree with your other reader,” no visits from big foot!”

I loved that picture of Elsa’s head under the bed – ha! And my Mom used to make whipped shortbread, too. It must be a Canadian thing and yes her’s had that little maraschino cherry in the middle. My memory is of eating them frozen, stolen from the freezer you see 🙂
Happy New Year!

I’m so glad to be part of your new tradition 😃. I ate the last of our whipped shortbread the other day, and I made myself eat them slowly and enjoy every bite!! Until next year….

Happy New Year, Dor! I remember our childhood dog, Chopper, and how he hated noises & thunder and shook uncontrollably if disturbed. We never stay up until midnight to usher in the New Year, except this year it happened unexpectedly. My husband woke me up when he came to bed at 11:30, and so I trudged into the living room. He joined me after a while and we found the New York ball drop on youtube and watched it. Success! 🙂

JT became stressed long ago and then I began to desensitize her using youtube videos on barely audible to me then over weeks began one click at a time and now she barely gives it any notice when thunder or fireworks are in the area.
Cookies look yummy!

I think sometimes hiding our head under a bed (or a blanket in my old dog’s case) makes perfect sense. :-0 I want to make your whipped shortbread cookies – and not just for New Year’s!!
