Pumpkin Pie No Longer for Christmas?
It was Thanksgiving and of course there were lots of pumpkin pies available for the big feast’s dessert.
I love pumpkin pie and it doesn’t even have to be homemade. Ready made and store bought can be just as good.
But Thanksgiving came and went and suddenly it was Christmas.
I planned to cook a ham dinner for Bill and me and friends.
And Bill asked, “What shall we have for dessert?””
“Pumpkin pie!”, was my immediate answer. I know I can make one from scratch, but just to save a little more time and effort, I felt lazy enough to add,
“We can just pick up a pumpkin pie
at the local grocery store.”
- And there was the rub!
- Alas!
- There were no pumpkin pies available.
No such thing at our favorite grocery store or any other store a week before Christmas or even days before Christmas.
I cannot even blame it on small-town country living since we have three major grocery stores close by. Maybe our small-town population is always hungry and bought up all the pumpkin pies.
At any rate, we wound up
having Key Lime Pie for dessert.
Not exactly Christmas Fare in my mind.
Perhaps we are trend setters?
The Key Lime Pie was good and went well with ham.
But here is my question:
Is this a new trend whereby pumpkin pie is now only acceptable at Thanksgiving?
And my second question is:
Why?

Christmas Ham Dinner Minus Pumpkin Pie
I don’t know about trends, but pumpkin never has been a part of Christmas in my family — even going back to my grandparents’ dinners. Pumpkin was Thanksgiving; Christmas was mince and apple. Now that I’m in Texas, it’s pecan for Thanksgiving and Christmas, pumpkin for Thanksgiving, and apple for Christmas.
Of course, pie wasn’t the only choice at Christmas. There were delights like apple cake, individual Pavlovas, a jelly-roll-like yule log, and cookies galore.
Sometimes, we went for simplicity, and “made do” with gooey chocolate brownies topped with peppermint ice cream and fudge saucer.
Key lime sounds pretty darned good, too.

I didn’t have any pumpkin pie during this Thanksgiving/Christmas season and was doing fine with it. That is, until you wrote this. Now I HAVE to have it. Going to the store as soon as I post this comment. Thanks, Dor !

Wow, I guess you have to special order one for next year! Key Lime does sound nice, though. 🙂

Merry Christmas to you and Bill 🎄🎅. I’m not a fan of pumpkin pie at all, so I would never buy that LOL. I love apple pie or anything that involves chocolate 😃, but tradition in our family definitely includes whipped shortbread which is melt in your mouth delight!!

I wasn’t looking for a pumpkin pie in December, but I THOUGHT they were available here. It’s too late to tell now. I would have welcomed the Key lime pie as a reasonable substitute. Your dinner looks marvelous.

We had pumpkin pie at a relative’s house last night. I think it came with his company Christmas ham. So at least a large food company in Los Angeles still thinks its traditional.

We had pumpkin pies available locally for Christmas. I can eat it year round. It’s just a wonderful custard pie!

Ask anyone in my family and they will say Key Lime is my favorite. Mary Agnes makes a Shoofly that is a staple at holiday gatherings, the dry recipe. She does a great Pumpkin also. Love either through the week with coffee for breakfast.
Cheers

The same thing happened to me. I love pumpkin pie and I was sure there would be some at the store–because it was just a week after Thanksgiving. There was no pumpkin pie to be found. Only pecan pie.
So 2 days before Christmas, I looked again. No pumpkin pie.
Guess I am just going to have to make it myself!

Nothing more disappointing than having your taste buds set for something and you can’t find it! We had carrot cake for dessert this Christmas because Safeway makes the best carrot cake ever.

Weird, huh? I always remember pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving AND Christmas so I don’t get it either. But I will say I’m a sucker for Key Lime pie so that would float my boat for Christmas dinner. 🙂

I admit, we only have pumpkin pie for Halloween and for Thanksgiving. Then, it’s on to our traditional “Chocolate Kahlua Cake for Thanksgiving! Don’t know why – maybe because all the pumpkins are frozen by December? 🙂

You will have to stock up for next year.

I love pumpkin pie all year too and can usually get it here – but not at Christmas. Go figure.

I will obviously have to learn to bake pies. Please send Mary Agnes here for tips and supervision. 🙂

It is a terrible thing but I am happy to have found a fellow sufferer who could not find pumpkin pies for Christmas. We have the beginning of a club! 🙂

Yum! I love carrot cake but never have it since Bill hates cheese and there is that cream cheese icing. He can detect cheese in anything and refuses to eat it – except on pizza. Imagine?

Whipped shortbread is a much lighter and fluffier version of regular shortbread that simply melts in your mouth. I will email you the recipe :).

They have them in the freezer section all year long 🙂 Your meal looks delicious! I made pumpkin bread and gave it away ~ too dangerous to keep in the house!
Mmmm ham dinner!
Cheers!
