Another Dog Story
Our new dog, Elsa – the one with the split personality – has already generated another blog post.
I never met a dog who didn’t want to play with a squeaky toy but Elsa is the first.
Elsa is different.
Elsa has empathy.
Impossible you say?
Today I purchased four plush toys for our new canine pal and couldn’t wait to get home to retrieve them from the bag and surprise her.
Squeak Squeak!
Look Elsa!
Look what I brought you!
Come and Get It!
Elsa’s response?
She whined!
And she whines every time I squeak a toy.
She also walks away and looks back (sorrowfully).
I think this is a rare sign of Canine Empathy. Elsa feels so sorry for the poor squealing toys that she will not even touch them, but simply cries for them (or with them).
I may be seeking a Canine Psychiatrist to analyze this.
As Elsa is a rescue dog she may have limited knowledge of what squeaky’s are for and is reacting to the noise. I haven’t met any dogs that didn’t like them either but when you get an adult dog you don’ always know their story. If only they could tell us. My guess is that if you leave those squeaky’s lying around she will investigate them in her own time.
When my Cindy was a puppy she would always react to babies crying on television by whining. She didn’t know any babies so I can only guess that it was the high pitched sound that had got her attention.

Good idea to leave a few of the squeaky toys lying around to see if she warms up to them. I will do that and thank you for the suggestion. I do wish I knew all she has been through.

How exciting! This dog is different! It’s going to be fun reading about her and how she affects you both.

It would be wonderful if they could talk to us and tell us how they feel, what they love and what they are scared of.

Elsa seems almost as smart as Herbert the cat who brings cans of food, and cat treats from the cupboard, to us, despite the fact that I had already fed him, too much.
Animals are the smartest people.

Don’t worry Dora, Koko was the same for a while. Now he brings his toys for us to throw so that he can fetch them. As you know he was a rescue dog and some of his worries we still can’t work out. For instance, when for no reason he goes and hides under the smallest and most narrow spot he can squeeze into or under. Maybe he feels more secure that way. Otherwise he is adorable and returns his affection to both of us. I love your dogs name Elsa. Enjoy her !!

Aw…we really don’t know what they experienced in their previous life. I’m sure she’s happy to have a loving home now.

Maybe she wants puppies of her own and the squeakies are a poor second …

My cats don’t play with “bought” toys either. They will play around with the free catnip mouse from the vet but if I buy the same one, nada. Not sure what it’s all about but I keep boxes and bags around which seem to make them happy. You will figure out what makes your pup happy. As another suggested, she may come around once she figures it all out.

Ah, poor Elsa. How does she like balls and fetch? It is a process getting to know a rescue. They often come with baggage and we can only guess at what their prior life was like. Your love and cuddles will go a long way to helping her, I’m sure.

Aw, that’s what your post made me say….aw! 😦 Elsa must be a sweetie who doesn’t want to see any “animal” suffer. I bet the squeaky noise makes her think the little fluff balls are dying.

Yes! Elsa has brought us one of her toys. She will not bite hard enough on it to make it squeak however. Just brings it to me as a gift.

You may be onto something there Dorothy!

The only thing that really appeals to Elsa so far is food! Never mind toys. She does want to play now though and strikes a very funny pose. I will have to try to catch it on camera.

Nope. Elsa refuses to chase a ball or play with a toy that squeaks. She will bring me one of her toys but holds it very gently – no squeaking allowed. And if I throw it, she leaves it where it lands. Who knows what experiences the Little Dude has experienced. She does have a ferocious bark though.

As others have said, I think that her experiences at her previous home may affect how she react to the toys.
