Would you believe I am afraid to drive through an automatic car wash?
But, last week, determined to be brave, I drove right up to the car wash place and inserted $7.00 in the order meter thing. Then clicked the button.
A lighted sign said “Drive Ahead.”
I drove ahead, adroitly crossed the hump and put the car in neutral as instructed.
Then
- A new sign lit up that said, “Back Up to Start”.
- So I backed up and another sign said “Drive Ahead”.
- I drove ahead and again crossed the hump and put the car in neutral.
- And a new sign lit up. “Back Up to Start.”
- And thus it went. Drive on. Back up. Drive on. Back up.
After about 6 times and concerned that the car driver behind me watching this fiasco would lose patience, I finally drove ahead and out of the place in a dirty car minus $7!
Fortunately, my son is now visiting and he went through the car wash for me – with no stop and go either!
This is a grand visit with our son and Bill and I are expecting the three grandgirls too this weekend. Sons and granddaughters make for a wonderful family I am so proud of. But, I am sorry daughter-in-law, Emmy could not join them here this time because daughters-in-law are wonderful people too and it would be so sweet to have everybody together.

Oh! They are beautiful people!! That’s marvelous that all but one will be with you. I know you are going to enjoy the visit to the hilt. I’m looking forward to some photos with adventures to match.

I’m not a fan of the automatic car wash either, Dor. I especially don’t like the ones where your tire has to align in metal track. Enjoy your family time!

We are sisters from different mothers. I fear auto car washes too. Made my husband go along last time and everything went smoothly. I just know if I had been alone, something would have happened.

Oh, I do not like those automatic car washes. There’s something about them that makes me want to jump out of the car when that machine starts gushing water on all sides of the car. It gives me the creeps. So hubby always has to take the cars through, not me. Thank goodness for the men in our lives, huh? You son and daughter-in-law are beautiful folks indeed.

Oh I am so glad someone else has trouble lining up the tires in the car wash tracks! 🙂

I love it that we are sisters Kate and doubly happy that you are as doomed as I am in car washes!

Yes… car washes remind me of MRI’s but wetter. Creepy. And then they don’t work for me – kind of like the electric carts in the grocery store that dies when I’m at the back of the store. Sigh. 🙂

Yep, that’s what it is – they’re like wet MRIs!!

We want to see any photos you are willing to share. My camera will probably get a rest when Nathaniel leaves for school.

Have a great time with family! As for the car wash, the name of it wasn’t Ping Pong Car Wash was it? That could explain it.

Thank goodness for sons (and daughters) who step in to help us when we’re confounded. It can be so nerve-wracking going through those car washes when you get the Back Up message. When I went through a couple weeks ago the machine only gave me $1.00 change (should have been $2.00) and then the dryer didn’t work. Big eye rolls!

I think maybe those car washes are rigged. I think they have somehow identified me and know I will be “confounded” and leave my money in the machine without using up the water! Ha! I love your comment Kathy.

So you made it 😉

It never occurred to me that anyone might be afraid of car washes — but yours may be more menacing than the ones we have around here. I laughed and laughed at your account of your back-and-forthing. Sometimes life really is just a chore.
On the other hand, I’ve not been through one in forever. I found a hand car wash place where they do a wonderful inside and out detail for $20, and I can drink coffee and answer emails while they’re working. It’s one of the little luxuries I grant myself. It’s better than wasting money on Starbucks, for sure!

No such luxury here for washing car and luxuriating. Ah well, the perils of country living! 🙂

I detest car washes too but have to use them especially in the winter. I am going to look for a hand wash place like one of your readers uses. Sounds like the perfect solution!

I hate car washes too and tend to get dizzy when the brushes go by so I close my eyes. Handsome couple!
