Happy Birthday to Kit the Wit
This my oldest, first, and Best Friend Forever.
Her name is Kit and we met when we were eleven years old.
She gave us nicknames then,
and mine was not too flattering but has stuck all these years.
She is Kit the Wit.
And I am Dort the Snort.
I call her Wit and she calls me Snort to this day and she will yell out to me in a store or other public place, “Hey SNORT! Come and look at this.”
I suppose people wonder about that, but I am so used to it I don’t notice.
We played paper dolls, jacks, rode bikes, stayed up all night giggling.
We went through the phases of our lives, first cars, first boyfriends, marriage, kids, aging.
And always laughter through it all.
We have stories to tell and memories to share about moon baths and sunburns and trying on her big sister’s clothes; about first loves and grown up relationships and raising sons.
She is still always late and I am always early. I am fussy neat and she is haphazard. Some things never change.
But I still learn from my friend – the meaning of patience and finding humor in the bizarre.
The thing about Wit is her kindness and her eternal sense of humor.
I don’t know anyone else her age who has a big collection of singing stuffed animals and who joyfully winds them all up to sing (not in harmony either) at the same time.
How I wish I could have been with Wit this June 16th for her birthday!
How I wish we could “spend the night” again one more time – talking and laughing, and laughing and laughing.
Once again, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY WIT! You are still my BFF. ”
It is a testament to your very fine character that you stayed friends with someone who nicknamed you ‘Snort,’ especially since you didn’t amend her nickname in retaliation to ‘Kit the Twit,’ as I surely would have done.
You are a far better woman than me. 😉 ❤

Someone I know has a pillow in her boat with this phrase embroidered on it: “Friends are like four-leaf clovers — hard to find, and lucky to have.” I’d say that fits perfectly for you and your friend!

Enjoyed this very much, Dor! My best friend passed away 10 years ago. She almost made it to her 50th high school class reunion! We knew each other from kindergarten. -Liz

Aw, Happy Birthday to Kit, who shares a birthday with my son! Aren’t “old” friendships the very best? There are so many memories to share, and I love your nicknames for each other. Quick story: when I was 15, my mom babysat a little toddler named Bobby. Mom’s name was “Donnie”, and everyone called me “Dianne”. Bobby couldn’t say our names at the time, so he started calling her “Nonnie” and me “Nan”. My cousin (same age as me) started calling me “Nan’ that summer too, and she called me that until she passed away 5 years ago.

Very sweet article. I have one long time friend from college. Though we’re 2000 miles apart, we try to get together every year.

Thank you Cindy! You are the first to commend me for tolerating that nickname. I wasn’t smart enough too think of Kit the Twit but will now let her know there may be a one letter change! 🙂 Hahaha!

You are right about that one true friend. Kit is very special to me and when we meet, it is as if we never grew up. We look a little worn, but the children inside us never change.

Oh what a shame you lost you BFF. You were friends since babyhood – a terrible loss.

I don’t think I ever told you Cindy but Kit is from Canada. She grew up in Port Arthur/Thunder Bay, Ontario until she moved to the U.S. and was lucky enough to meet me when we were 11 years old! I think she will get a kick out of a Happy Birthday wish from my new Canadian friend(s). Thank you!

Yes, nicknames are strange and fun too. My little brother could not pronounce Dorothy so I became Dorfy and then Dorf to the family. “Snort” is bad, but other friends thought I was funny and named me Dork, and now that has stuck too. 🙂

Great idea to meet every year. Wit and I are on opposite sides of the country too. She is in Las Vegas and I am in Virginia. We should have made that pact a long time ago.

Snort, huh? Well, it takes a good friendship indeed to withstand the nicknames after all these years. It’s truly wonderful to have a friend who knows all your ins and outs and loves you all the same, isn’t it? I have a couple of those who have been my friends since early childhood. What treasures we have, Dor! Happy Birthday to Kit the Wit! She’s so blessed to have you as her life-long pal.

Happy birthday, Kit the Wit! I laughed at Snort, because I can’t think you would ever snort. Thank heavens my embarrassing nickname came from my uncle and would not have been shouted out in a store! I was Boopsie to him.

And I am blessed to have a blogger friend who understands the value of those long long and close close friendships! Thank you Cindy.

We do like to think of ourselves as “treasures” – a bit on the antique side but still valuable. Many thanks! 🙂
