Smashed Bird Feeder Courtesy of Bruno the Bear
We lived to tell the tale of Bruno the Bear.
Last night, if you may recall, I was cowering in the back room watching Bill try to defend our home from a very BIG bear!
Really.
I estimate Bruno was over 300 pounds!
I considered that our lives were in danger but in some ways the scene at the living room bay windows was hilarious.
Bruno was pacing back and forth and looking in at Bill.
Bill was growling very loudly and swearing at the bear. He (Bill) was also waving his arms around and snarling and making monster faces.
My HERO!
We had the lights on at the deck so I was able to see Bruno’s reaction.
He looked a bit irked.
I should have snapped a picture but was afraid it would irk him more. It wouldn’t take much for him to lean on a window and enter the house!
Finally Bruno decided to leave (but momentarily forgot the way he had arrived).
I think the HUGE BIG BEAR stayed visiting us for about an hour. Maybe it was less but it felt like an hour.
Actually, it felt like a few several hours and I got dressed while Bill was playing his monster roll (just in case we had to flee and stay at a motel for a few days).
Then it got quiet and stayed quiet, and we gave up and went to bed. Bruno must have gone on to other things.
Let us hope it will remain quiet again tonight.
Bruno also left his mark by attacking a towel rack on our deck (now hanging askew).
Do you suppose Bruno hates horses? Why knock things awry like that anyway?
And a neighbor reported that he tore down a birdhouse with baby chicks in it but they are still alive!
Well, our trip to Washington, DC was fraught with tension due to the monstrous traffic. But then we returned to the peace and quiet of the Virginia countryside only to find a monster in our midst.
I have to admit Bruno was kind of cute though. Those little round bear ears and inquisitive face.
I hope, however, that he doesn’t mistake me for Goldilocks!
Glad to hear all is well (except for the poor feeder). Just think, you now have a classic family story that will only improve with the retelling. 😉

Yes. It will be like “fish stories.” The bear is already getting bigger with each telling! 🙂

Not sure what I’d rather have pay me a visit…a bear or an alligator. Yesterday, on the news, I saw a story about a couple in Florida who had a giant gator on their front porch.

Well, I’m glad you were able to ‘bear’ the excitement and both you, Bill, and your house are still in one piece except for the bird feeder. And what the heck does Bruno have against horses? Seriously though, I do think it’s kinda scary that he tore down a birdhouse with babies in it. And I also think your hubby is WAY braver than we would ever be by making noises and faces at your intruder!

I had no idea bears would go after hanging bird feeders. (or towel racks). Glad you’re safe.

Harrowing story. Believe it or not, we have a black bear here in Virgina Beach. It likes to hang out around Fort Story military base and First Landing State Park which adjoin each other. He is rarely spotted.

Yikes!!!!! Exciting, but glad not too exciting. You need some bear mace.

Wow! He did a number on the bird feeder! Better the feeder than you!

Oh how I adore your blog posts :). Virginia isn’t only for lovers. It seems as if you must be a bear lover too!! LOL

Arrrgh! An Alligator!? Nobody ever told me about the danger in adding a deck to your house.

I think Brave Bill scared me more than the bear with his growling and monster moves. Evidently the bear did shrink back and looked startled but I don’t know if it leaving was due to fear of Bill or because it had just polished off the sunflower seeds.

I am glad you are both OK. It must have been quite scary thinking that Bruno might actually be able to get in. How do you bear proof a house?

Oh my that’s so scary! I can’t believe you had such a huge bear just outside your window!! I’ve seen bears twice over the years here in Seattle, but never right outside my own home! Glad you and Bill are okay — too bad you didn’t get a picture of Bill and his antics! 🙂

Woah, Dor! Glad all is well. As much as I want to see a photo of the bear, I’d love to see a video of your husband’s antics at the window! 😂This will go down in your family lore.

I love the way you wrote about the bear and Bill. My fingers are crossed that the bear won’t want to come back to visit.

Yikes Dor; who knew there were scary big bears in Virginia. thought you guys were much more civilized up there!!! Thank goodness for heroic husbands!

Ooooh… if Bruno got in the house we would have been in the car and headed for a motel.

Bill and his antics would definitely have gone viral! 🙂

It is already a story to be told and retold and the bear gets bigger with every telling! Bill and his antics was the funniest part and he scared me more than he scared Bruno. 🙂

I doubt we have seen the last of Bruno…… but hopefully he will keep his distance now that he has seen Bill growling at him.

Yes, and Bill and I were just congratulating ourselves about living in such a quiet peaceful tranquil place when here comes Bruno right onto our deck! Heroic husbands are nice. But this one didn’t really scare Bruno into moving out of range. 🙂

You wanted a photo of Bruno. I’d like to see one of Bill menacing the bear.

Ditto! I was too terrified to think of the camera.

I don’t blame you. I can’t imagine such a large menace on the other side of glass.

I thought bears liked picnic baskets and honey, what the hell!

Glad all was ok in the end. I can’t imagine what it would be like to see a bear outside your house 😮. The scariest things we ever get in Wales are foxes 😆.

They do! But unfortunately for us, they also like sunflower seeds and hummingbird food .

We have foxes here too, along with bob cats, deer, wild turkeys, ground hogs…… you name it. A veritable wild life kingdom that is quite lovely. However, having a 300 bear looking through our windows was a bit unnerving.

It must have been unnerving bless. Having all of those animals around sounds so lovely (well the less scary ones anyway ) 🙂
