As I write this, there is a great big Virginia black bear lounging on my deck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is 10 PM and we are at the end of a mild thunder storm. I was sitting in the living room watching a weather program about surviving hurricanes when I heard sounds from the deck (right outside the window).
I turned on the outside light and there he is – Bruno!
He is, as I write this, ignoring the storm, but busily scratching himself and looking very content.
Bill went to check things out and said our bird feeder is now gone. It was full of sunflower seeds.
That’s it for bird feeders! If we survive, I will remove all feeders forever after!
Bill is spying on the bear now. I wish I could take a picture but maybe the flash would agitate Bruno.
I am cowering in the back room wondering if we will survive the night.
To be continued.
Ahhhhh!!!! On your own porch! Yikes! I hope you get this comment. I hope you survived! We need an update!

OMG !!! Dora, He’s back…… I hope everything is O.K. by the time you blog us all again and he goes away without to much damage. Can you call in a ranger or someone to deal with this animal.?

Oh, my! Is this the first time that’s happened? I think it’s pretty neat that hubby and I have been to visit you and Bill and know the layout of your living room/porch, so I can imagine the situation. Can’t wait to hear updates.

Poor Bruno :(. Out there in that nasty storm all by himself, and you didn’t even ask him in?? Bahahaha :).

🙂 Maybe put the feeders out farther?

Whoa Dorann!! That is a scary moment. I want to hear the rest – how long was he out there?

A bear visit is always exciting. 🙂 I trust you survived.
We take down our bird feeders every night and bring them inside. If a bear does visit, it can help itself to the crumbs. It isn’t convenient, but it is the only way we can continue to enjoy the birds. Right now we have two pairs of rose-breasted grosbeaks, cardinals, goldfinches and woodpeckers that visit regularly, all in brilliant spring breeding plumage. Hard to give that up!

We have survived! Hope Bruno steers clear of us from now on though. 🙂

I need you here Cindy! No way was I going to snap a photo with the flash going off in Bruno’s eyes. We have good strong windows but they would not stand up against a bear! I know…. I am a devout coward.

I wanted to call someone but Bill held me back. I am no longer going to feed birds and hopefully that will keep Bruno on a different path. 🙂

First time a bear has come so close. We had one walk down the driveway once and he had a picnic under a pear tree way down past the pool. But no bear has ever been seen on our deck!

I kept thinking that if he were a dog I would invite him in. He was so cute with those little round ears. Bahahahaha! He didn’t pay the slightest bit of attention to the storm or the lightning or even us turning the lights on.

Great idea except he would still destroy them. My friend brings her feeders in every night. But it’s a long way for me and BigFoot to walk to the nearest tree over uneven ground. Bruno is winning this battle or perhaps losing a food source.

I estimate Bruno was out there an hour. On the other hand, it could have been 2. It was probably 3 though. Who knows?

Oh, I know what you mean Eliza, but considering BigFoot I will not be able to retrieve feeders each night. Bill could do it, but he is already doing so much in other ways.

I’ve never seen a bear, your run in was good enough experience for me.m!

That’s a shame, the birds are going to suffer. But it’s best to be safe than sorry. Best wishes for NO MORE BEARS !!!

We have that conundrum with raccoons. Fortunately they are not as scary or destructive as your bear friend.

So I’m guessing when you live in God’s mountain country you just have to grin and BEAR it. Be safe and keep the lid on the Honey.

Thank you Rita. Your wish is my wish too – “NO MORE BEARS!”

Both of ’em are bold when it comes to food. My mistake was in assuming bird food in a little feeder could satisfy a great big bear.

I am actually bringing in the humming bird feeder at night…. sugar water may be too much like honey!

Our area is tame compared to yours. We had coyotes in the cow pasture last night. They screamed for a minute, and then all was quiet.

Coyotes are dangerous for cats and other small critters….. but I have seen them around here and they are beautiful.

The cat that walks with us most mornings is the one I’m concerned about. She lives in a neighbor’s garage and is free to come and go at all hours. We thought we may have spotted a coyote from a distance recently. The animal was dog-shaped, and we don’t know of anyone here who lets their dog run loose.
