I can still hear the peanut man calling!
When I was a young girl my family went to evening baseball games at a local park. There was always a man climbing the bleachers and calling out in a singsong voice. He had a carrier full of warm delicious peanuts. The aroma alone was to swoon for. And twenty-five cents would buy a little brown bag.
Years later I discovered I could roast my own peanuts and duplicate the flavor.
If you are a new guest at our house, you might mistake the peanuts for garden variety supermarket Ho- Hums, but if you politely taste one, guaranteed you will be asking questions.

The recipe is simple but start with shelled, blanched, raw peanuts. I get mine at a place called “The Cheese Shop” in Stuarts Draft, Virginia. You have probably guessed they carry a lot more than cheese.
And Bill and I are going there tomorrow to stock up!
Recipe for Dor’s Home Roasted Peanuts Ingredients: 1-2 lbs shelled, raw, blanched peanuts; 1 tsp butter (or I use coconut oil); Salt to taste.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spread all the peanuts in a rimmed pan (I use the bottom of my oven broiler pan).
- Bake on middle rack for about 6 minutes and then stir everything around.
- Bake 6 minutes more and stir again.
- Repeat #4 two more times.
- Peanuts are done when they are a deep golden brown color.
- While still hot add the butter (don’t be tempted to add more than a teaspoon or they will be too greasy). The purpose of the butter is to provide a coating the salt can stick to.
- Salt to taste.
- I freeze mine and bring them out in small quantities as needed.
We’ve recently discovered Texas Roadhouse restaurant where they have salted roasted-in-the shell peanuts waiting at the table for you. We usually say that we can just cancel our order because we fill up on the peanuts! Yours sound yummy: will have to try them!

Never forget one day taking my son to a ball game and the guy in front of us would reach in a bag, pull out one shelled peanut, crack it open cleanly, eat the peanuts inside, and drop the shell in another bag, all with using just that one hand, all without looking at it and all the while not missing any of the game action. We spent more time watching him than the game.

These sound wonderful! What a treat to prepare them ahead and freeze them. I would never have thought of that. Have you ever tried Mrs. Kinsinger’s fruit cake? The Cheese Shop looks like a place I would visit.

I agree about the boiled peanuts Tina! Tried them once on the way to a high school reunion in Florida. A fellow grad was raving about them and so I tried and then tried to act like I liked them. Truth is – “Yuk!”

I have never roasted my own but I know that yours would be addictive, Dor. I love boiled peanuts…guess I’m in the minority…and I’m a northerner. 🙂

That is the perfect recipe: not many in gradients an no complicated preparations. Have you ever come across a raw peanut that wasn’t ripe, or was spoiled in some way?

Hahaha! If it is complicated I don’t make it. As for a bad peanut, I have never found one and if there was, I think it would be sterilized or pulverized in the oven whilst cooking.

Oh Ronnie …. this recipe is made using “raw” peanuts, so by definition they aren’t ripe and not edible until you cook them in some way. I use them to make peanut brittle too. 🙂 Thanks for asking.
