Change is o.k. I guess.
But at what point should one begin to think about starting over?
I am giving serious consideration to reliving my life with new loves.
No, I don’t mean acquiring new relationships.
Well, maybe so. Maybe some relationships. Relationships with places and things.
Long-time favorites once loved and counted on are either going, going, going, or gone.
- The downtown gift shop I loved and even wrote advertising copy for is selling out!
- The health food store I depended on for expensive delicacies and youth restoring vitamins has already closed its doors.
- Long nylon nightgowns that helped with silky, sleepy, bed-turning are now considered “Vintage” and impossible to find unless you want to sleep in something slept in by somebody else.
- Big terry cloth pot holders with pockets are missing. They may be another vintage item. (Hurrah Ebay!)
- My quilted barn coat is getting frayed from 12 years of use and is irreplaceable. The store that carried it no longer carries it. Neither does anyone else.
- Favorite tea flavor (Vanilla Caramel) is gone from our local grocery stores. Is there such a thing as Vintage Tea? (Yay! Amazon!).
Every day something else is NA (Not Available – To be youth oriented, I am practicing talking in initials) and the search begins for replacements.
“Such is life,” my sainted mother used to say.
She never told me I would lose so many old loves and would have to start life over.
You are describing my life. If I like something, I consider buying in lots because as soon as someone gets wind that I like it, It will be discontinued. Barn jackets? Can’t believe they are gone! Maybe those rustic places? Pot holders are my pet peeve. I just want the simple square quilted one. Nope. gotta have pockets or plastic spots on it. Oversized too. I actually considered making some myself. (Yeah, that lasted for a minute.) Finally found something, oblong rather than square with a pocket but simple and not too big. Perhaps I should buy a lot.

That is SO true…. sad to become attached to something, only to find that it’s no longer available.

Well, they say a change is as good as a rest Dora. But where does one start is the point. By the way I am also a lover of Caramel and Vanilla ” anything” I.E. tea, coffee, caramel filled chocolate, etc., You’ve got me thinking about making changes now, but I do generally change things when spring arrives, such as the furniture gets moved around and things in the garden get moved to another place etc., Only today the potted flowers on my balcony got moved down into the garden.Haven’t decided what to replace them with on the balcony yet.

It looks like even Sears is closing, an American staple for over 100 years. What is the world coming to?

I love this post. I have bemoaned the loss of shops and services, too. Taking it personally, I felt every store that closed was my fault for not buying enough there. I didn’t apply the logic that one customer cannot totally support a business. I’m just going to sit and commiserate with you for five minutes.

So true. I always know when a store is going to close or a product discontinued – if I like it, it’s doomed.

Hey Kate…. I found the pot holders on Ebay!!!! They should be here tomorrow. I bought two, but if they are really right, I will stock up. Like you say, “buying in lots” may be the secret.

Maybe it’s the aging tendency to resist change but I insist that the old things were better…. right down to the horse and buggy. 🙂

Hey Laura, All’s well here and I can’t wait until you make your move. When will that be????? There are more and better restaurants here now so that’s one good thing. Shopping is still limited but you and I can make outbound runs. And of course I am here for you so that’s the best thing of all – right? No pup yet but I figure you can help me with that search too. Hugs, Dor

Good girl Rita! Changing everything around springtime is probably an inbred habit passed down through the generations. It all goes along with renewal and growth in the season.

I think my mother lived in a Sears house you could buy in a catalog. What a shame to lose such an American landmark.

Yes, I also blame myself for the loss of favorite establishments. On the other hand, there are some stores I deliberately wish would close. And when they do, I am always shocked to have such power.:)

So true! We like Vanilla Caramel tea, too, and yes, most of our teas come from Amazon now.
