I have suffered numerous bad habits over the years, beginning with Thumb Sucking.
My parents tried everything including rubbing something on that tasted bad. Nothing worked. Finally, on the first day of kindergarten the teacher announced, “Look around children. We have a baby in the room.” And there they were all looking at ME! I do love commanding attention (still) but that was the last day of thumb sucking.
Then in the teen years there was the Nail Biting habit.
Would you say these habits were symptoms of an insecure personality?
In those days, long fingernails were a sign of beauty (but mostly a sign of control over one’s habitual impulses). I proudly decided to stop nail biting and stopped. Congrats to that determined young woman.
Smoking was another horrible habit which took hold for years until I stopped “cold turkey”.
I still feel rather smug and self-righteous about that and sincerely try not to lecture friends about the evils of smoking.
Oddly enough, Rubbing-it-In can become a habit too.
But now my latest habit involves Reading Books!

READING BOOKS?
Habitual reading maybe?
Habitual reading of special interest books?
Too much reading?
Too much of the same kind of reading?
No, No, No and No.
What happened the other night revealed an entirely new habit to break.
The story goes like this: I was reading a “real book.”
The definition of a real book is one you can hold in your hands and turn pages. If you are destructive you can even write in it or turn down page corners (but this is a travesty and can be considered inhuman behavior).
Anyway, I was reading a real book for a change and suddenly found myself tapping the side of the page.
Nothing happened so I tapped again.
Then I tapped more aggressively.
Nothing happened.
Until it finally clicked in that I was not reading on my Kindle, and could not tap the margins of a real book to make it turn a page.
I had to turn the page myself!
Talk about a strange habit in late life!
THE PAGE TAPPING HABIT!
THE KINDLE READING HABIT.
THE HABIT OF READING BACKLIT PAGES WITH NO PAPER CORNERS.
THE HABIT OF TAP TOUCHING THE MARGIN TO GET TO THE NEXT PAGE.
This habit of page tapping has become so ingrained I may need lessons on how to read a real book – the kind you can find in the library – or at least some libraries.
I hear some university libraries are doing away with real books and going fully digital.
Yikes!
Any suggestions for a cure though?
I am a Habitual Page Tapper and need help to break the habit.
That’s funny. I can just see you tapping the page! Reminds me of when I come back home from a trip out and sometimes tap the “unlock” key on my car remote to unlock the front door. Only my wife has seen this, but now the world knows.

Bahaha! I loved this post :). I, too, go between real books and ebooks and sometimes forget which type I’m reading. I love my tablet for reading ebooks because I always have 100’s of books with me wherever I go, but nothing will ever replace a real book’s feel and smell. Try putting your finger between the page you are currently reading and the next page, so that you are always ready to flip it over. Maybe that will help LOL. By the way, did you hear that apparently the “real” book is making a comeback? Apparently, young readers prefer real books, so they don’t think there is a danger of them disappearing anymore. Yayyyy!!!!!

That was hilarious! I tapped a book once and felt so silly. I read mostly blogs now, so I’m not likely to let book tapping happen again.

Oh, that’s funny about tapping the page (can’t relate, as I don’t have a Kindle…) but still a funny story.
Your teacher calling you out about the thumb-sucking probably wouldn’t happen today.
Congrats on kicking the nail biting habit AND the smoking.
I went cold turkey on Diet Cokes recently, and am proud to say I haven’t had one in over two weeks!

Okay, we need some behavior modification here! Dr. Cindy’s recommendation is one hour turning pages in a real book then rewarded by one hour reading those backlit pages of your Kindle. 😉 Of course, I’m kidding, but as much as I like reading on Kindle, I also must have my ‘real book’ fix and go to the library fairly often to check out some books. It makes me really sad to hear that some colleges are going totally digital.

My grand daughter has the ugliest habit of all. She (at age 9) sucks her tongue so that it protrudes from the front of her mouth. Will this ever stop???

sound serious. You might need to call in the Kindle intervention team …

Collecting cats is habit forming too. Sigh. All remotes are not alike. For example, the phone remote will not change the TV channel and vice versa yet I have a habit of picking up the one closest to me expecting it to do what I need. Super sigh!

Morning Dor. Congratulations in breaking all those habits. I never bit my nails and still can’t imagine putting fingers in my mouth. But I guess I had and still have, other bad habits. And reading late into the night is one of them. And yes, a few days ago I posted on my other blog about a real book I’d read. I’d forgotten how right it felt to hold a book again. Might try it again soon.
And from a rainy autumn/fall day in Wellington I am hoping spring is bursting out around you. Xx

A “real book” comeback! Hurrah! I am still not used to the Kindle, but apparently enough to keep on tapping. 🙂

I do so appreciate your behavior modification schedule Cindy! It sounds like a cure for the book tapping habit – that is if I could remember which hour is which. 🙂

That’s a new one Ronnie. And I, as the most sought after advice giver, have no advice to offer. On the other hand, maybe the tongue sucking thing is only a phase and she will outgrow it soon. 🙂

A habit that’s fun is o.k. in my book and cat collecting fits. I do relate to the remote control chaos though. I have saved remotes that may stillbe operable in addition to the operating remotes in various rooms and in helter skelter places. Eeeek.

Thank you Judith! I too am proud of breaking those habits but did not mention quitting cream in coffee or the ability to resist icecream too. In this part of the world I might be called Wonder Woman. 🙂 Seriously, I agree with you about the joy in holding a real book again. And yes, spring is beginning its burst in this part of the world. Hard to believe you are approaching winter. Be well and warm my friend.

Apply the wire thingy to all tapping fingers. And you would hate reading a book after me (as does my husband) because I underline and annotate. It is how I retain important things, and it is also a good way to review the book by only reading the “important” parts. 🙂 No dog ears for me, though.

Hmmmm! Not a bad idea. Alll the underlining and notes would be very helpful. 🙂
