I thought it was all over –
the growing season for herbs I mean,
because my sweet Basil plant was beginning to flower.
“This is the end – the last harvest,” I thought, and sadly pinched off every leaf for drying.
“Thank you. You did a great job,” I said, feeling guilty about taking its life.
And in the end it really was the end. There were two skinny sticks left with no foliage.
I tried pulling the naked sticks out of the pot to discard them roots and all, but they fiercely resisted.
“Oh well, I will put off the final dumping of dirt and stems for later.”
A week later it was later.
And look what I found!

My Basil’s Second Life
“I’m not finished yet!” said my tough little Basil plant. “Just look what I can do with no attention, no water, and a mistress ready to chuck me over the rails!”
LOL! My plants seem to do better with less attention too. 🙂

Love that you gave Mr. Basil a second chance. I did that once with a grapefruit seed that was sprouting when I cut open the fruit. I planted him and he’s now 2 feet tall.

What a feisty, sweet little basil plant! People and plants can be so surprisingly full of life.

Its amazing how you think plants are dead and all dried up. But some of them are tough little beggers aren’t they Dora. Low and behold there they are sprouting their little leaves and defying you not to throw them away.

I’d pulled all the leaves off mine for a recipe and cut it back–now it has new leaves, too, where none remained! I thought for sure it was a goner.

Basil seems to have been the “come back kid” this season. Mine hung on no matter what until the first real freeze. 🙂
