Sadly neglected irises are the flowers we count on to return to our trial-and-error Virginia garden year after year. I bought the bulbs nearly 20 years ago, planted them in a line and left the bed virtually untended forever after. Ignored and all but forgotten over each winter, the brilliantly purple blooms unfailingly return and return again in the Spring – more beautiful than ever.
Hi Dora, I love the Iris and am about to put on a post about its history you may be interested in. !!

Beautiful, Dor! It’s hard to believe they’re 20 years old.

Irises are like that. I just wished they would bloom more than once but their huge flowers sort of make up for that.

Well, they certainly don’t look neglected! So pretty. Irises and gladiolas came up year after year in my mom’s flower garden for as long as I can remember. Your photo brought back those sweet memories.

Same here. But I count among my irises one that my aunt shared with me a few years ago – one that my mom had shared with her many, many years ago. It’s a treasure!

I agree Jill… I can hardly believe the Irises are that old and still thriving.

It’s like the red bud trees here. They are ordinary weedy things all year but then have their springtime show of glory. I suppose Irises are the same.

Maybe the oldies are what they now call “heirloom” varieties. 🙂

I always forget how people share such plants through generations. The Stonewall Jackson House garden in town has so many of those “originals.”

Irises do have that nice dark green spikey foliage to enjoy.
