It started with Bill’s cold and nagging cough.
To avoid germs and assure peaceful slumber, I moved to the guest room.
I woke up at 9:00 that morning thinking, “Wow, it’s really late and I NEVER wake up at 9AM. There must be something wrong with me.”
I even wrote the whole event down in a journal to take to the doctor at checkup time.
A day or so later (while still languishing in solitary confinement) I woke up at a more acceptable 8AM.
Regaining consciousness is sometimes a bit of a feat but I managed to glance at the clock and thought,
“Why do I not hear Bill in the kitchen?”
To further explain this you need to know Bill is a man you can tell time by.
Example: He used to take GI showers (rinse, turn off water, lather, rinse).
One day Son called and asked to talk to his Dad.
“He’s in the shower,” I said. “Oh,” said Son, “Is he on the first or second wash?”
You get the idea right? We can tell where Bill is at any given moment.
And he is normally in the kitchen at 7:15 AM SHARP making his own breakfast.
I studiously avoid Bill in the kitchen because I tend to give him morning sickness.
Lest you judge my wifely aptitude, I used to make his breakfast but he could never eat it because he said he felt sick.
One day I didn’t wake up in time and he made his own breakfast and felt fine.
He determined I made him ill and has made his own breakfast ever since.
Anyway, on this particular morning from my place of solitary confinement in the spare bedroom, I was listening for Bill in the kitchen.
He is usually promptly there puttering at 7:15 AM. The clock said 8:00 AM and there was utter silence!
I struggled to fully wake and kept looking at that clock. Waiting. Waiting. 8:10AM. 8:11AM. Where was Bill?
And I had a panicky thought. “Maybe he is dead. What should I do?
Should I take a mirror in to test his breath? No, I will wait a little longer.”
At 8:15, I became overwrought so staggered into the master bedroom.
Sure enough, Bill was there but he turned and looked up slightly blinded when I put the light on.
“What’s wrong???” he groaned.
“Are you all right?” I asked.
“Yes,” said he. “Why?”
“It’s 8:15,” I said.
“No, it’s only 7:00 AM! Go back to sleep.”
And so it was that the clock in the guest room was wrong.
It was wrong the day I thought I slept until 9AM and it was wrong the day I thought I lost Bill.
Although there was after all, a happy ending, I am furious and have further lost faith in anything electronic or digital.
I am convinced we need to regress to simpler times for wind up clocks with numbers that do not light up.
A horse and carriage would be nice too.
it wasn’t the first day of Daylight Saving Time that day was it?

Ha! I thought maybe the time change had gotten you. Poor Bill. “Maybe he is dead.” LOL Thankfully, you are both just fine.

Ha. I think you were pretty smart to put that paregoric in Bill’s breakfast so long ago to buy yourself an easier morning routine, Dorann!

Are you sure it wasn’t because the clock went back Dora ?

Well, you have the horse and carriage right there in your hometown, should you decide to resort to that!!!
Cute post – glad everything was okay with Bill! (By the way, did you manage to avoid catching his cold?)

I’m with you, Dor! Give me the old wind-up alarm clock…except they tick very loudly.

I forgot to put that in. All the clocks in the house had been reset to Daylight Savings time. 🙂

No… we had actually reset all the clocks in the house so it wasn’t the time change. These events were no doubt triggered by a higher source trying to tell me something. 🙂

I would like to take credit for that clever thinking. Truth is, I am probably not a healthy looking sight in the morning or in other words, “a turn off.” 🙂 That may be as good as a dose of paregoric

I distinctly recall resetting that clock to Daylight Savings…. but you and others are gently hinting that it may be age related self deception. In any case, the old clock has been replaced with a self-setting version. 🙂

I like your calmness at your “maybe he’s dead” thought. A mirror to check? I have to remember that. Once in a while when my early rising husband sleeps in I watch his chest to see if it’s still breathing. Then I roll over and go back to sleep.

Yes! Thank you Dianna. All is well with Billy and I never caught his cold! Separation, hand washing and sanitizing must count. 🙂

Now you have me thinking about manual typewriters and radios with Off, On and Volume buttons. One digital clock has inspired time travel backwards. 🙂

I want to go back to wind-up clocks too! No matter how many times I reset the digital one on my side of the bed, it always shows the time as 10 minutes later than it really is. And the luminous blue light it shines at night keeps me awake so I have to turn it backwards to get to sleep. Then when I wake up in the middle of the night, I have no idea what time it is. As the kids say – first world problems. Glad your Bill recovered and you didn’t catch his cold even if you were slightly askew time wise. 😉

A great story Dorann – oh Bill what would he do without his protector and worrier!! Wind-up works really well, at least in our house. Have a great weekend.

I could really laugh at this post. John has been retired for several years now, and he still sets his clock for 5:30 in the morning. It’s a trial for him to wait for me to wake up in the winter, since I set my clock to walk in daylight. I’m still laughing at the question, “first or second wash?”

Yes…. I just bought a new clock with a blue light – thought it would keep the room darker. Ha! It’s a “first world problem” for sure. 🙂

🙂 I am so glad to know the wind ups are working. I need someone to wind me up too though.

True story about the first and second washes Anne. Funny though, how we cling to some of our work-day habits when we are retired and no longer on tight schedules. Waking up at 9 would not be such a bad thing at that. 🙂

Hahaha! Even your comments are hilarious Kate! The chest watching and then rolling over anyway! 🙂

Glad Bill isn’t dead…beauty sleep is a much better alternative! It’s crazy when a clock is off in the house…or perhaps I should say I get crazy!

One of the two days in the year when normally punctual people don’t do what you expect them to do. Our DST ends this Sunday so it’s a timely reminder to me to put the clocks back.

I can definitely relate to the rising and shining at different times. I tell friends not to call me too early, as I have trouble forming sentences before 10 a.m. 😉

The key word is “synchronize.” And maybe this is something I didn’t do with the clocks in the house and the time change. 🙂

That feeling when you wake and don’t really know what day/time it is – like you’ve been transported – gah!! Had it today, I have the day off, and I slept past the alarm (why did I set it? who knows) – then when I woke I was all wonky. Still am. Glad everyone is ok!! MJ

LOL on this one Dor! Sounds like we have some things in common–my husband is definitely a morning guy and I am not! He also prefers his own cooking early on–probably just tired of waiting for me😊😊😊
