I have just returned from a trip down “memory lane” with my friend, Kate of CoffeeKatBlog who wrote Things About My Youth.
We sort of grew up during the same era and many of Kate’s memories are mine.
Her funny, delightful post reminded me of a poem I wrote a long time ago about a girl in a photograph.
Who is that girl in the photograph,
the one with the spark of youth
dressed for a prom in a silken gown
with a faraway look of hope?
Who is that girl in the photograph,
the one with the faraway dream,
dressed in her best to celebrate?
I think she may have been me.
I remember that dress in the photograph
and the boy who was just as scared,
that soft starry night of the senior prom,
I remember the night clear and fair.
But who is that girl in the photograph?
She seems someone else I once knew,
the child I was, growing up and out
in a world that was changing too.
And onward time marched in quick-step
When a different boy called her wife
while the glowing girl in the photograph
stayed young and full of life.
The seasons passed and the years ticked on
while the picture stayed the same,
through challenges of work and home
and a son making Mom her name.
Running and running the years went by.
Now a grandma looks to the past
at an image of hope for an unknown life β
the young girl in the photograph.
Aw,,,I love this, Dor! Look how cute you are!

Oh you look so pretty Dora. The poem you wrote is very touching and you are brave going down memory lane. When my family come to see me we nearly always have to get out the photo albums as my grand daughters love to see photo’s of their dad when they were kids.It usually ends up with them having a good laugh and me feeling a bit depressed knowing how the years have slipped by. Oh well, such is life. But I would not change a thing.

Beautiful picture. I thought about posting my prom picture but it terrified me. Your gown is lovely. As I remember mine was a very pastel pink fluff. I’m not sure I liked it even at the time but it was wonderful to wear a long dress with either a hoop skirt underneath or crinolines. Can’t remember which. Great poem. I too often happened what happened to that naΓ―ve upbeat person I see in my old photos. A reminder of how fast time flies.

Going back in time takes time and a lot of day dreaming. The prom picture always takes me back quickly to the “age of innocence.” Thanks for your good thoughts Rita! π

Posting my prom picture terrified me the first time and this time too… mainly because the changes in real life are so profound. But sometimes it’s nice to remember and romanticize the past. π Thanks for the inspiration Kate.

That was rather wistful and nostalgic, but look at you now! You’ve accomplished so much and been a great influence on many people. I’d rather know the now you than the then you.

Trust me. Your prom picture is much better than mine. My hairdo had side wings (what was I thinking?).

Long gloves were still in then – for formal attire – and like today, all the young girls wore the same types of gowns and I think they all had the gloves too. They did feel glamorous! π
