Magnets are fascinating!
I remember little girl games played for hours with a simple magnet purchased at the local five and dime. My little brother and I would experiment to see what kinds of things it would suck up. Would it magnetize pins through a piece of paper? How many nails or paper clips could it hold at once?
And now magnets are everywhere. There is one in my purse that snaps shut to hold a cell phone and a bunch of magnetic things on the refrigerator too.
And how about jewelry like bracelets, necklaces with magnetic clasps, and even therapeutic magnetic jewelry to end depression and cure arthritis?
I even have some magnetic earrings.
They hold together all the way through my delicate
(un-pierced) virgin ear lobes!
And Executive Toys are here to stay for grownups who have nothing productive to do at work. I gave one of those games to my boss once and hinted for a raise. I don’t think he got the hint though.

Magnets are still fascinating though, and guess what I am going to do on Thursday (for my mystery foot diagnosis)!
I am going to Roanoke, Virginia for an M R I !!!!!

MRI Machine from
science.howstuffworks.com
That stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Ha!
All that modern technology stuff has to be a hoax and an MRI is probably only a great big magnet!
This is worrisome because there are three metal plates and six metal pins in my right ankle from an old break. Obviously, all that metal is major suck-up material for a big old magnet right?
It doesn’t matter they will be trying to get a view of the left foot and ankle (referred to as the “lower left extremities”).
And does anybody care that my whole body
(and all its extremities)
may be slurped up, into, or onto a giant magnet?
And never to be pried loose again!
If I should survive, however, you may be sure there will be a progress report on what happens when an MRI Machine Meets a Magnetic Personality.
Stay tuned…..
It will be magnetizing I’m sure! Don’t fall asleep in the MRI. I always do…..

I loved the little magnetic Scottie dogs–one black, one white. I cried when I lost the black one and now, 63 years later I have a real black Scottie!!!

Having this “magnetic” experience should be material for some great posts. See, it has already produced one good post! Seriously, I hope it all goes well and you find the cause of your foot problem. Good luck!

Don’t worry about the magnet. It’s an electromagnet so if you do get slurped up into it, they just turn the power off and you’ll fall with a big splat onto the floor. A little sweeping and mopping and they’d have the whole thing cleaned up in no time and you’ll be contained in a nice large bucket.
You’ll be fine. Let me know if you need any more comforting thoughts.
But I would leave your earrings at home…

I’m certainly attracted to your writing. Hope you can pull off the MRI machine.

May you survive and not get sucked up. 🙂

I just love your humour Dora, !! I also played those magnetic games as a kid
and the paperclip one always fascinated me. As for the fridge magnets today I used to hate them but people insisted on giving them to me as a small gift along with other birthday and Xmas presents. Now my fridge door is at the moment just half covered so there’s room for more. Some of them are quite nice though such as, Knossos Palace magnet and Prince of the Lilies magnet.
Good luck with your scan and I hope everything is going to be O.K. x

Don’t worry, I’ve seen Bryan survive two MRI’s, so you’ll be fine. It’s a perfect opportunity to have a little nap since you can’t move or talk while they are scanning you. They are truly amazing machines though seriously. Bryan had gone through test after test to try and find the source of his seizures, and it was only when they did the MRI that they found a scar on his brain that was the culprit. You will be fine – they know what they’re doing – and hopefully they will figure out what’s wrong with your foot. Fingers crossed :).

This is very encouraging! Thank you my friend. And I am so glad they found Bryan’s problem. Hopefully there was something that could be done to control the seizures.

Thank you Rita. All those magnets on the refrigerator carry special meanings and messages – a lot like Christmas ornaments. 🙂

Ditto Anne! We are magnetic friends. And thank you for the well wished pun about “pulling off” the MRI machine. 🙂 Clever girl.

Hahahaha! Andrew – I think I will copy your hilarious response to take with me instead of earrings. It will be a reminder to staff to have the bucket handy after the Big Splat. 🙂

I keep thinking I have run out of things to write, but then a “magnetic experience” crops up. Hopefully, there will be something hopeful and hopefully funny out of the actual experience in the MRI machine. Thanks for your well wishes Coastal Crone! 🙂

Awwww! I too had a real black Scottie once – named Pepper to match her personality.

It must be wonderful to fall asleep in an MRI but being a worrier, I expect I will be wide eyed and waiting for some unexpected magnetic experience. 🙂

Hmmm….I’ve had MRIs for breast cancer. I’m surprised they can “do you” with metal in your other foot. Be sure to tell them. Make it a good day by taking some Xanax or Valium and you will nap for sure. The really good news is that with a foot, you won’t need to have your head in the tube. That’s what was always troublesome for me.

No worries, Dor. I’ve had many MRI’s and so far, I haven’t gotten attached to any metal objects.
MRI are a great way to detect what’s really going on.
Good luck!

Well, Dor, we all already knew you have a magnetic personality so that’s no surprise. Here’s hoping you don’t get stuck to the inside of that MRI wall – magnet to magnet. Seriously, I do hope those medical people can ascertain what the problem is with Big Foot and that easy mending is on the way for you.

MRI is an amazing imaging technology, it will really help in determining the cause of your problem. I’ve seen 1,000s of MRI studies and I’ve never seen anyone harmed in the process. The principal of MRI is based on the same thing that makes firefly’s glow at night, anything that wonderful can’t be too scary.

Best wishes for your magnetic personality and surely those Dr’s. and nurses will get to the bottom of your swollen foot – here’s too MRI and magnetism for resolution. Waiting to hear your good news.

He takes medication every day, and it fully controls his seizures as long as he stays away from high frequency flashing lights. It could truly be a lot worse, and we are very thankful that he is ok :).

When I had to have an MRI they gave me headphones and choice of music to listen to (very soothing). Maybe you’ll have that, too. It was tough remembering to wear nothing metallic (think bra clasps and rivets on jeans) which never even occurred to me!

Big Foot agrees and thanks for your well wishes Cindy! May they find the problem with the MRI. This has been going on for six weeks now.

Now that is a lovely thought Charlie – that an MRI is based on a firefly’s glow! Thank you for those unique words of encouragement. 🙂 I wonder how is it that you have seen 1,000s of MRI studies?

Thank you Eliza…. who would have “thunk” bra clasps anyway?!

Well, it’s not surprising, that with your ‘magnetic’ personality you would have a ‘magnetic’ body to go along with it….(in your foot anyway)…. Hopefully, that great big MRI machine won’t ‘slurp’ you up, What a Thought! Love, Wit

It was a very, very difficult time, but once the diagnosis was made we just dealt with it and taught Bryan that everyone has something to deal with, and he shouldn’t hide it or feel bad about it. It could have been much worse!

Thanks to my oldest best friend “Kit the Wit.” Not everyone has a magnetic foot you know (to go along with a magnetic personality). 🙂

I swear you and Mikey are the best parents I have ever met. Your kids can only come up to be stellar human beings. Bryan is surely already there and I know he has had your strength and support every step of the way.

Magnetic is right, Dor. I was riveted throughout this whole story. I told my friend today that it sucks to get old (of course, it beats the alternative). But the body’s little betrayals are unacceptable.
Hope you get thru your MRI with flying colors. 😉
