Bill and I were on our road home tonight when we saw a doe and her spotted baby.
“Oh look”, I said, “There is the Mama deer and her little one we have seen lately in the neighborhood.” I always wished I could get a photograph but Virginia doe and their fawns are often very elusive.
“No! Look! There are TWO!” I cried, “And they are TWINS and they are feeding!”
Bill stopped the car and I held my breath.
The Mama deer looked right at us as if to say, “I CAN’T MOVE NOW. DON’T YOU SEE THESE KIDS ARE HUNGRY?”
And there she stayed for several minutes, just long enough for me to take out the camera and try to get a shot.
Awwwww, so cute and mama’s looking at you!

She absolutely knew we were there but couldn’t resist the babies’ urgent demands.

She wasn’t a bit happy we were even there Jill, but she is a tribute to the love of a mother to keep on feeding her young in the path of destruction.

I can’t believe you got these shots!!! They are wonderful. How beautiful the mama was–a different variety of deer than I’ve seen in person–very sleek and graceful like a ballet dancer. I’m so glad she obliged you with her stillness for long enough for you to get these shots. Judy

It was a phenomenal few minutes for sure and I couldn’t believe the mother made a conscious decision to trust the big car not to harm her and her babies.

It felt like a wondrous privilege to be allowed to watch for those few minutes.

One accidental nature shot in 26 years does not a nature photographer make. But it was incredible to watch that little vignette I’ll tell ya. 🙂

Many thanks – and for the reminder about the daily post photo challenge too. I was so happy to get those shots and to capture the few minutes the doe allowed us to watch. 🙂
