Thank you son for the odd thing you sent to Dad for Christmas.
Some holiday gifts just stand out – like this strange sculpture I call “The Hand Out.”
I wonder if anybody out there in the blog-us-fear will know The Hand Out’s real purpose.
I will even provide some helpful Clues:
- It is a manly gift.
- It is certainly not fine art.
- It is not supposed to be in an elegant living room but I can’t resist.
- It should be in a “man cave” maybe.
- It can stand on end and looks like a wave, “hello or goodbye.”
- It will hold about 10 pieces of M & M peanuts.
- It will hold a few small coins as a hint for visitors to leave gratuities.
- It does not come in pairs so it is not meant for prayers.
- It is heavy.
- It is a fairly ugly object that invites derision.
- Uppity people will talk about your decorating sense when they leave.
- It inspires laughter but polite people exercise restraint.
- Impolite, ignorant folks laugh out loud.
- Bill and I laugh each time we pass it by.
In the end, son, The Hand Out is really an inspiration to guffaw.
Because after all, laughter is the best gift of all.
H A P P Y N E W Y E A R !
I am trying to resist my natural tendency to go overboard with handy remarks, punning away madly. I like it and I think we should give Son a big hand for such a clever gift! If I had to guess, I would say maybe an ashtray?

Cool gift, but we really need to make adjustments so it holds more than ten M&Ms. Happy New Year, Dor! xo

Oh, please do fill us in Dor because by the sounds of it I’m going to be one of the ignorant ones who laughs out loud :).

I’m thinking if it’s a man’s hand, it should hold the TV remote control! Ha! It’s definitely worth a laugh. 😀

Dor, this post is great! It is a really interesting piece. Did you really count the number of M&M’s? 😉

Okay, I’m a sucker for a challenge, but I cheated by asking google. Does Bill smoke cigars? It is an ashtray, something one rarely sees these days.

Yep – I counted the M&M’s because the palm of The Hand is so shallow. Glad you liked this crazy post. 🙂

I will put that down as an excellent suggestion Cindy! Thanks but The Hand is made for greater, smellier things. 🙂

I love it! And of course, putting money in the palm makes it just right.

All I could think of was a hand up, not a hand out. Interesting!

I bet it was for cuff-links. But it is certainly quirky. Reminds me of Thing.

My first thought was that it is where you put your change at the end of the day and my second thought was a bird feeder. Very cool whatever its purpose.

Turns out The Hand is strictly to hold a cigar. I prefer the money though. 🙂

Yes, it does make me think of a hand up now too…. funny how words just pop in without warning. Turns out the Hand is really for holding a cigar. It’s a cigar rest. Weird huh?

There was a movie called The Thing years ago. The Hand leaves a sort of “horror” image too. Cuff-links are a darned good idea but the “thing” is really a cigar rest. 🙂

Good thinking. I might try The Hand as a bird feeder! Actually, it’s a cigar rest. Yikes. 🙂

🙂 Great guess Eunice! It would work for that for sure. But it’s a cigar rest! Bill smoke cigars but I will only let him do it outside. He can take The Hand with him. 🙂

YOu are too good! It may be an ashtray although I don’t think it’s deep enough. They call it a cigar rest.

You are on the list of people who want The Hand! An ash tray guess is good. It’s a cigar rest! Thanks for stopping by my blog lifelessons. A pleasure to meet you.

You are right on Eliza. Bill does smoke cigars but only allowed to do it outside. He can take The Hand with him. They call it a cigar “rest.” 🙂

Is is a door stop? or a book end? I am stumped……

Ahhhh, that makes perfect sense, Dor. I could picture a big fat cigar resting comfortably in that palm. Blame all those years of smoking (EGAD, I can’t believe I ever did that) for my tendency to still see many things as potential ashtrays! Are you fully recovered yet from that nasty bug?

How weird. Makes sense I guess.

I see it as a good way to divvy up the M&Ms. Ten for the hand…the rest for you.

It took us a while to identify it too. We had to refer to the gift notice. 🙂

All better and recovered from the flu. I was once a smoker too – very dedicated, and now equally dedicated to fresh air. 🙂
