Rosa is a most beautiful golden horse (a Palomino) who lives nearby.
I pass her paddock on my way to town.
“Stop to say hello,” she would always seem to say and I would make that stop.
We connected.
And I somehow knew she loved our visits.
“Hellio beautiful Rosa,” I would say. “You are so sweet and so good and I love you.”
And then I would be smiling and on my way..
But one day Rosa was gone, and the next and the next.
It was so disappointing to drive by her empty pasture.
I missed Rosa and our odd communications.
At first I thought our neighbors sold her but when I inquired they said, “No, Rosa is lame. We are trying to help her with vet care and hoping for the best.”
And Rosa was gone for many more weeks until I had almost given up hope of ever seeing her again.
But now Rosa is back! And just in time for the holidays.
She seems to favor her left back leg and stands with it semi-bent as if to lighten the load.
But my hope is that she is mending. It is the season for miracles after all.
How I love stopping for human conversation with a horse who is so skilled at silent communication.
Her eyes say it all.
And I think she knows that in my eyes, she is truly beautiful.
Horses are spiritual and Rosa is a beauty. Tell her Mike loves her.

Oh, what a beautiful horse! I held my breath when I read the part of your post about her not being there…… I, too, hope beautiful Rosa is mending. Saw this quote recently: “There’s just something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man”… (or a woman!)

How lovely! I am fawning over a palomino colt at the moment, wondering if I dare add him to my herd of one. Even my husband is tempted. 😊 I’m sure Bear would like a brother …

What a beautiful creature! I’m so glad she is better and back in her pasture to visit with you. And thank you too for explaining “palomino.” I never knew exactly what sort of horse it means. My cat has those markings. Can “palomino” refer to a cat, too, do you suppose? 😉 Cheers! WG

The definition I found only refers to palomino as being a horse of that golden color WG, but I think it would be lovely to call your cat a Palomino! 🙂 She must be very beautiful.

Two’s always company and they are good for each other. I hope you do add to your family of horses and I know Bear would love it. We had two – Martini and Lucy, who both grew to very old age before they died. Lucy was 32 and Martini was 28. Toward the end we no longer rode but they were beautiful pasture ornaments and we loved them dearly.

And that quote is so very true Dianna! I used it once in an article I wrote. And it was Winston Churchill who said those words.

Oh Rosa ! She is just Gorgeous ! I am so please you put photo’s of her here so that we could see how beautiful she is, and that expression well, I am sure she was posing especially for you. I hope she makes a full recovery not only for her owners but for you Dora, because as you say, when you pass the paddock you truly do miss them. I know because I had the same experience with a wonderful white horse whom I called ‘ Snowy’ of course what else ?. But I missed her more than anything when we moved house. Sometimes I think we get attached to animals as much as humans, maybe more.

Oh, I’m so glad that Rosa is back and feeling better. You had me worried there for a minute!

Did you ever notice that many of the lead horses in old westerns were Palaminos? They’re drool-worthy and so is Rosa! Hope she recovers fully … any leg injury in a horse is serious business.

Like Woodland Gnome, I didn’t know the significance of “palomino.” What a gorgeous horse. I’m so glad she is back in the pasture and continues to heal up properly. I guess lameness can be very serious. My neighbors have horses and I remember them putting one of theirs on a strict diet because she was getting so fat from eating all the abundant grass in the field that they feared she would go lame. Fingers crossed for Rosa.

Rosa is so beautiful. I’m glad she seems to be on the mend. I bet she missed you as much as you missed her! My sister and brother-in-law had horses for many, many years. My earliest memory of a horse is a gorgeous Palomino by bro-in-law had when he was dating my sis — the horse’s name was Jet.

I’ve always loved Palominos, gorgeous breed. (But what breed horse isn’t?) If all of us send a little prayer to Rosa, I’m sure it will speed her recovery. 🙂

I hope so too MJ. Rosa is just so sweet – not only beautiful, but sweet. And yes, how that you mention it, I recall Trigger (Roy Rogers’ horse) was a palomino too. 🙂

The odd thing is that sometimes there she is – Rosa in her pasture watching for me. And then the next day she is not. Today she was there with another darker horse. I hope they got a friend for Rosa because my little conversations from the car are not enough.

Even if she has a friend though, you’ll still stop to chat right? 🙂

And how I do agree with that Rita! We get attached to animals – maybe “as much as humans, maybe more.” Bill and I began here with two horses and two dogs, all lost to old age. Then we got Rozie, the rescue dog, and had her for five years. The losses were as painful as losing family members. We are animal free for the moment so Rosa and the birds and wildlife are filling in.

Well, brother-in-law was a barrel racer so the horse named Jet made sense in that context I guess?
