Friday Rambles
O.K., in spite of writer’s block I’m writing. That’s what the advice is. “Just start writing.”
I didn’t think there was anything to write about to describe this week. It was birthday week after all and I have already worn out my welcome concerning birthdays – especially in the blog-us-fear.
Then again, the big day got stretched out. Our son came early and stayed several days, culminating in a visit from our oldest grandgirl who came for dinner. And before the actual day, Bill gave me a brand new camera. But I told you all about those things.
After the family left we were invited for a Filet Mignon dinner at a dear friend’s home. Hurrah! Great company and great food!
On birthday morning there was a package from all three grandgirls. It is a heart shaped silver locket. When opened, it looks empty, but I loved it right away for the expression of love.
Still, why would a locket open to nothing? Playing around with it a bit, the heart did open more and finally to a four leaf clover of heart shaped frames! Each frame holds a tiny picture of a granddaughter and finally a picture of my son. Talk about a wonderful gift!
On that very same day I went Christmas shopping with my friend, Pam! Nothing like getting a head start on the holidays, and what a fun thing to do on a birthday!
Tonight Bill and I are going to a special place for dinner so the celebration continues. Friends will join us at Rocca’s, the newest restaurant in Lexington, Virginia. It’s part of the Robert E. Lee Hotel, which has recently been refurbished and restored to it’s former downtown glory, complete with a 1920’s décor and revolving doors in front like a posh New York establishment. There are even pay phone booths in the lobby that no longer take coins but look the same as in yesteryear. I think they may provide internet access but I do prefer pay phones. All that’s missing is a speak-easy!
Today I stopped by my favorite shop in Lexington too. It’s called Virginia Born and Bred and it is patrolled by a vicious creature who gives you nasty incredulous looks if you are not carrying treats. Don’t let his name fool you into thinking he is a soft, sweet cuddly thing. Teddy knows how to stand his ground! He thinks he’s intimidating you but he’s really a sweetheart. How I love Teddy.
You have my word that this is the final word on birthdays. My father used to warn us kids never to wear out our welcome when visiting friends. It’s the “dead fish” saying that visitors will smell bad after three days.
Fall comes and goes (see, I have already changed the subject) and our Red Maple has finally turned color. That tree is actually gorgeous this year, with yellow and pinkish yellow leaves. I will take a picture later but not too much later. The winds are up now and I don’t know how much longer she will hold onto her “crowning glory.”
It has been a glorious fall in this part of the world, but there are now definite signs of winter sneaking in.
I am in a holiday mood already. How about you?
I’m a big believer that visitors stink after 3 days (and sometimes it doesn’t take 3 days depending on who they are) so I love your Dad. We are expecting that arctic vortex this weekend too (boo!) but best of all today we replaced our two ratty looking front porch Christmas trees. It was my husband’s idea. I can hardly believe it. We tried to do it last year but we waited too long and the inventory was gone.

And this is you with writer’s block? I loved this post, Dor. Where to start? The locket is absolutely precious and your son, well, kind of a hunk from what I can tell! Filet mignon with friends and Christmas shopping with Pam? Wonderful. And I’m dying to hear about Rocca’s. Maybe we’ll take a trip out your way as part of the holidays….Lexington is such a wonderful town…..although Teddy looks awfully fierce!!

But let’s just get through Thanksgiving before we talk about Christmas and winter! I’m in no hurry for that! 😉

Sounds like you’ve had a wonderful birthday week. (Back in June, when I had my birthday, I declared that from now on, instead of celebrating one day, I’m going to celebrate ALL WEEK!)

Oh yes! Please plan a trip to Lexington over this holiday time! It would be so much fun to get together. Teddy will be happy to see you too as long as you bring in some treats. Dinner at Rocca was great tonight – a bit on the noisy side but the food was fabulous and everyone bent over backwards to make us happy. Lexington is getting to be quite cosmopolitan – at least we county dwellers think so. 🙂 P.S. One of my gifts was a Betsey necklace. I love it!

That’s the spirit Kate – getting rid of “two ratty looking front porch Christmas trees.” I’ll bet your house looks very festive, assuming you replaced them with two handsome specimens.

I love birthdays and you certainly had a good one Dora. Love the necklace what a wonderful gift, so unusual. Like everyone else we too look forward to Xmas. There are about 12 of us who get together at our friends place where we play dominoes each Thursday evening and we all contribute to the Xmas fayre .Our hosts Sue and John cook the main English traditional meal and I cook mince pies and Xmas pudding ,also make trifle, while others provide the vegetables Xmas crackers wine and other cakes and puddings. We end up like stuffed pigs. We all take presents and place them under the Xmas tree. Yes we also have silly hats. GREAT FUN.

Happy Birthday, Dor. Mine is tomorrow (Nov. 9th). I plan to celebrate it for at least a week. 😉 I’d do it for the whole month, but our youngest’s birthday is Nov. 27th and she insists that I share the month.
Teddy is such a handsome dog, and your birthday locket is just so heartfelt gorgeous. 😉

Your Christmas traditions sound fabulous Rita – and all those delectable dishes. My friend makes a grand trifle and mince pies too and I’m excited to report that she will be here Xmas Day to spend a few days with us. I will try to convince her to make trifle and mince pies. Another English friend (the one who was sent to live in the country during the Blitz) sends her homemade English fruitcake every year complete with a marzipan icing. I can’t wait!

That sounds like the traditional Xmas cake Dora, and its the marzipan I love. I still have the wartime recipe for marzipan. When I make this at Xmas I have to steal myself not to eat it before it gets onto the cake and I have to make some more. Not too keen on the icing though. I will be thinking of you and your friend this Xmas.

I say drag the celebration out as long as possible!
The leaves changed so quickly, and with the cold and wind, a lot of them will be missing.
