Last night my family in Carlsbad, California were asked by the police to evacuate their home.
The effect on all of us – east coast and west – was stunned shock.
The rapidness of the spread, the random fire re-starts, the devastating heat and low humidity all combined to form a brutal enemy.
This morning, at least for now, things have calmed down a bit.
My family are back in their home.
The fire headlines and constant news coverage have seemingly disappeared.
Everyone is safe. Keep your fingers crossed.
“Life is good.”
Oh, Dor, I can so relate to this. My brother lives in the foothills of the Rockies and has long lived in dread of the wildfires. And last September, the opposite happened. Major floods struck and his entire family had to be evacuated. We just visited last week and the impact of that historic flood is everywhere. We take so much for granted on a daily basis and I am so happy to hear that your family is safe and their home not destroyed.

That must have been very frightening both for your family in Carlsbad and for you hearing about it and being so far away. Our bushfire season is over thankfully but you can never tell what Mother Nature will dish up next.

O.M.G. Dora what a devastation !. I do hope your family and everyone evacuated will be alright . It seems there is tragedy after tragedy these past few years in the world. Of course its a case of coping and not panicking. That’s easier said then done when tragedy strikes so quickly I know.

I didn’t realize they live in Carlsbad! Oh, my God, I do hope the danger is over.

Thanks Barbara and I too am so sorry your brother went through that terrible flooding too. Fire and water are so necessary but so devastating when they get out of hand.

It does sound like things are improving considerably, at least in Carlsbad, although there are still out of control fires within 15 or 20 minutes from them in San Marcos.

Thanks Georgette. Imagine that this is only beginning of the CA fire season?

Oh no the arsonist is back on the job. There are seven fires burning now, the temp is in the 100’s and the wind has kicked up wickedly. All the fires are near highways. San Marcos is getting punched now. So relieved your son’s house is okay. I thought of him. These fires may well outburn 2007 which was hellacious.

Yes, it is a very dangerous situation. Last I heard, 5 fires burning in San Diego Co. Wow! The pic above is ominous! We are fine up where we are, but it is dry, heating up, and the winds just never end!

A horrible situation Cindy. We visited San Marcos when we were out there for a visit. Son’s house is in tact but my daughter-in-law says it smells like a barbecue.

Will do that. Thanks Jill.

The fires are more in San Marcos now – about 20 minutes from Carlsbad. We were there in both places visiting and they are such beautiful areas with lovely homes. What a shame this is. Thanks for your good thoughts Cindy. 🙂

Whenever I though about living in California I resisted because of my fear of the “Big earthquake” coming. But I never fought about fires, and they are far more frequent than serious earthquakes. Mother Nature puts her finger on every place, does’t she?

I used to think San Diego was the safest best place to be with the perfect climate. Nature sure does play some funny tricks.

Dor, I am so glad to hear that your family is safe. Those fires were scary. My son seemed to think they would be safe in the city of San Diego, but the temps were near 100 degrees and most folks don’t have air conditioners down there. He had to keep soaking his shirt in water and wearing it wet. One fire was seven miles from where my daughter-in-law works. So happy that your family is OK.

Yes, I always thought San Diego was the safest place to be as well as the most comfortable climate. Seems there are always exceptions but let’s hope all returns to paradise with no more threats from nature or otherwise. Glad your family are o.k. too – odd that both our sons are out there.
