Daily Prompt: Brilliant Disguise
Tell us about a time when someone had you completely fooled, where the wool was pulled right over your eyes and you got hoodwinked, but good. Was it a humorous experience or one you’d rather forget? What was the outcome?
I was an adult and had never been to Disneyland. “Fun for kids,” I thought, but I felt above such things. There’s always a first time of course, and that first time as Bill and I wandered around the streets of the Magic Kingdom we came to the Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea exhibit.
It was a cave of sights and probable sounds from the famous Jules Verne story. “Impressive,” I said as we departed the underwater atmosphere. And just as we left the exhibit, and almost as a farewell statement there was a statue of a deep sea diver standing at the exit.
I walked up to it and looked directly into the diver’s mask. I remember tipping and turning my head as I gazed into the mask to see if there was a face inside, when suddenly…..
“HELLO,” said the statue in a big deep voice,
and then moved to give me a big hug!
I jumped at least two feet with my hand to my heart and gave a helpless cry!
That statue was a real person who looked just like a carved statue!
How did they DO that?
With a red faced grin I looked back at Bill and he was laughing. He was not alone.
There was a little crowd gathered beside him who evidently knew I was a sucker and were just waiting for the inevitable results.
The only other ego reducing event that day was when I walked into a lamp post. I was so awe struck by Disney’s world that I wasn’t looking where I was going.
Have you ever seen “mimes” on the streets who stand motionless, daring anyone to challenge them? They’re quite shocking too.

When I went to the Kennedy Space Center years ago, they had a man in an astronaut suit that did the same thing. Loved to watch people get freaked out!

Oh, Dor, we must be related. First off, I would have completely jumped out of my skin when the statute came to life. Secondly, I’m constantly walking into things. This morning, I walked into the corner of a wall. 🙂

Oh Dor, I am so sorry to laugh at your expense, but I can’t stop!!! That is a great story, and it sounds just like something I would do :).

I made the mistake of going to Knotsbery farm for Halloween. I knew it was spooky, but it was those darn people, posing as trees that always got me the worst. I, too, walked around Disney with an open mouth the first time I saw it.

Ha! Great little story Dorann. I remember going to a haunted house in 1979 (I even remember the date) with my girlfriend. There was a guy (he was wearing a vest – looked like a part of a suit) walking in front of us, well something popped out of a corner and it scared me so bad I screamed like there was no tomorrow and I literally ripped his vest right off him. When we finally got outside I overheard the workers talking about a woman who was screaming the whole time she was in the haunted house! That was me – ha.

Good one! I have yet to step inside but having been a Walt fan my whole life I would have to pay attention as well with all the sights and sounds 🙂

Thanks for visiting my blog Sue! And thanks for the tip on the Kenned Space Center. To get caught twice like that would mean there is a message there for klutzy people like me. 🙂

Glad I’m not the only one that stumbled around Disney the first time – running into things. I kinda knew that but it felt like I was the only Miss Gullible at the time. I’m sure it will happen again too. 🙂

O.K. Mary – now I feel better. I remember wanting to scream but just jumping and breathing in with a loud noise…. no screaming. 🙂

Oh Dor, you know how to make me laugh! I love how you just threw the “walked into a lamp post” in at the end. 🙂 Your delightful story reminded me of a time my mother and I were braving the arctic chills of a winter’s shopping night at a local Bradlees (now that store’s out of business) on the outskirts of Boston. I was a teenager, in high school in the marching band. We were out running errands, blustery and cold and nodded to the Salvation Army worker outside the store’s entrance that we’d donate on the way out. That was my mother’s secret trick to make sure we didn’t miss out on the sales, but also did our social duty. On the way out, we rushed over and tucked some bills into the bright red bucket. Snow whipping our hair, the kindly gentleman looked me straight in the eyes and said, “God Bless you, Melissa.” My mom and I about died. We stared at him, but he gave no clue how he knew my name. It wasn’t until we were safely out of the storm and buckled in the car that we realized he’d read my name from where it was embroidered on my marching band jacket. Still, it didn’t dull the magic of that moment.

Isn’t it wonderful how easily we surprise ourselves? Thank you Melissa for your ever-lovely comments. And now this one is a thriller because it recounts your own story of being astounded by the Salvation Army worker who said your name. A magical moment for sure. 🙂

This really made me laugh! It would take some story to describe even some of my ‘spaced out’ (as my daughter would say) moments … I am rather known in some parts for getting lost and wondering how did I ended ‘there’, walking into glass doors without realizing, or (while I was still driving) forgetting where I have parked my car … and other assorted ‘adventures’ -:)!

That is the absolute perfect comment! 🙂

And you ran into the lamp post BT, before texting, I assume?
One vacation, I remember sitting down with a bald, mustached man for breakfast, reaching for his spoon to stir my coffee, looking up and realizing he wasn’t my bald, mustached husband! I could have died!
