Daily Prompt: Those Dishes Won’t Do Themselves (Unfortunately)
What’s the household task you most dislike doing?
Why do you think that is – is it the task itself, or something more?
I am an “I hate to cook-er.” That means that in spite of being mysteriously regarded as a gourmet cook, I definitely hate the whole roasting, toasting, broiling, baking experience.
Maybe I have been cooking too long.
But the task I hate the most about it all is making salads!
There are no shortcuts to making salads are there? And we have one every night – every single night of our lives (except when we eat out of course).
What is it about making salads for decades that is so daunting?
It’s all the cutting up of the same old same old ingredients – you know – lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, ad infinitum.
Sometimes I just slice cucumbers and tomatoes but Bill treats them like a salad anyway and has that look like he thinks something may be missing – namely, lettuce peppers, onions and the ad infinitum stuff.
Tonight I made a huge salad with everything in it so we can have it again tomorrow. Hurrah! Nothing to cut up!
But tomorrow I will have cooked for three days in a row.
On the third day the meals from our kitchen deteriorate into not-so-tasty-less-than-delicious-repasts. (Not on purpose, honest!)
But on the third day when burnt things appear along with less than perfect salads, Bill “gets it” – the cue.
It’s time to go out!
Saturday we will be dining with friends at a local restaurant where someone else will be doing the cutting up.
Maybe I will try a Honeymoon Salad next at home.
Have you ever heard of a Honeymoon Salad?
It’s “Lettuce (Let Us) Alone!”
LOL, I’m with you there. I think you are right, after years and years of cutting up vegetables, it gets old. Same with cooking. I LOVE to eat salad, I adore it when someone else makes it. Every once in a while, my husband obliges. I swear salad tastes better when someone else makes it!

Enjoy your dinner out on Saturday.
The household task I dislike the most: vacuuming!

I don’t mind the cooking, but please “Get your own beverage!” is my call for a house that wants six different things.

The whole cooking process doesn’t thrill me either. No matter how good and wonderful a meal is, I still have to make another one tomorrow!

I loveeee to eat, but I absolutely hate cooking. It’s such a waste of precious time, and I agree that salads are one of the worst. They are so tedious LOL! Thank goodness I have a husband who loves to cook :).

Good idea Georgette – – self serve beverages! Maybe that could be done with salads too – leave whole veggies on a board for guests to cut up! Onto something there.

Too bad we aren’t neighbors. You could come over to cook and I could come over to vacuum. I actually enjoy vacuuming since you can see positive results and it will last a few days.

You are so fortunate your husband sometimes cooks or makes salad! Bill does, but only if I’m sick and not interested in food. Ah well, “Such is life” as Mom used to say.

I agree, salads take too much time and energy although I love them. I do not enjoy cooking either; for me, it’s a chore! Of course I’ve always said I’m not really a cook, I’m an assembler. 😉

I like that – an “assembler.” Nicer than “a chopper.” 🙂

Lucky you Jill! My Dad liked to cook at home too, but not the husband. He will if I’m sick of missing action though.

I love to cook but salads are tedious. A really good one has lots of stuff in it. Each thing needs to get chopped. Sometimes I take a shortcut and buy cole slaw at the deli!

You can be an assembler too, I’ll share my title! 😉

I hate to unload the dishwasher. I don’t know why; I just do. I used to make my girls do that chore and, now that they’re out of the house, that’s what I miss most about them. 😉

Yes…. I forgot about the dishwasher. That too is a much hated chore and it never ends either.

Take out is good! No chopping. And if we were neighbors we could meet halfway and eat out together too.

Tedious is the perfect word for a good salad. Cole slaw’s a great idea. Why haven’t I thought of that?

LOVE IT! I want a salad EVERYDAY but sadly with shoveling I have no time 😦
At a WW meeting they suggested this past summer to shop either at store or Farmer’s Market(my back yard) and go into the kitchen and wash them well and slice and chop and shred and pack them up for easy breezy salad making then I saw this cool idea on Pinterest a Salad in a JAR! Now it all looks good but if I am going to do all that work I will just sit down and scoff up salad! 🙂 Maybe that was really WW p[lan but I got to tired 🙂 Like you I can cook awesome and when I go out I order Seafood and Salad two of which I would prefer OTHERS TO DO 🙂 so yes your post brought me right back to summer thanks I needed that my dear friend! 🙂 Have a great time out tonight! Maybe I will ask him to treat me to some yummy Seafood 🙂 Are you related to Rebecca Rule? 🙂

Hey, we’re going out tonight, too. Can’t wait to let someone else do the cookin’. P.S. My most dreaded chore is scrubbing the bathtub. Oh, painful! Had to do it yesterday. Sigh.

Hmmmm! Salad in a jar! Scarfing up salad is not a bad thing. Maybe I would lose the calories with all the chopping in advance. No, wish I was related to Rebecca Rule. That is very flattering Eunice. Many thanks. 🙂

Dor, thank you for your honesty! It is so wonderful to hear these thoughts from you, because I don’t like to cook either!! 🙂 And of course I do it almost every night. That’s why I love soccer nights — when the kids are done, we bring home pizza. HOORAY for Mommy, as well as for them (they’d eat pizza every night, of course). I really enjoyed your post, as it sounds so much like how I feel! But just like you, I keep at it. And for that, I say you deserve a great round of applause! Now go out to dinner to celebrate!

Dear Melissa, Our dinner out was wonderful! The place was filled with young people going to a formal dance at a local college. The cadets were handsome in their uniforms and the girls were beautiful in their long gowns and one even had a sparkling tiara. Our dinner was scrumptious since it was cooked by someone else I think, and there were lots of laughs with our friends. Nothing wrong with bring home pizza either. Wonder if we can do that tomorrow night! Thanks sweet friend for your lovely comment. 🙂

Oh, and drying all those ingredients, particularly the lettuce! Even if you’ve got one of those whizzy things, paper towel is still required. My hubby loves very thinly sliced salad ingredients; I go for the more rustic look – so, often, he’ll offer to do almost everything, except the damn lettuce laundering. 🙂

Thanks for following my blog bluebee. Drying the salad? I know about that. I even have one of those spinners but I wind up just washing and then shaking the lettuce over the sink. Our salads are always slightly damp. By the way I love your blog and I’m following you too. 🙂
