They say there are very few truly American foods or recipes,
but has anyone ever thought about the Fluffernutter?
Now I know many blogger folks hail from New England, where the Fluffernutter began,
but this blogger certainly never heard of such a thing.
Have you ever heard of a Fluffernutter?
It’s a sandwich!
And it’s made with peanut butter and marshmallow creme (usually pressed together on white bread). The term “Fluffernutter” is also used to describe other food items like deserts that include the same peanut butter and marshmallow crème ingredients.
This sandwich even has a history!
It was created in the early twentieth century after marshmallow crème was invented in Massachusetts and a recipe for it was first published during World War I. It has even been proposed that the Fluffernutter be proclaimed the official Massachusetts state sandwich!
What does Fluffernutter mean? Who knows? They say an ad agency coined the term in 1960 as a marketing tool – maybe because of the fluffy marshmallow crème which is sometimes called marshmallow fluff.
A friend told me about this unique sandwich. She said, “I grew up on Fluffernutters.” “OhhhKayy,” I said. What’s a Fluffernutter anyway?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this: and I KNOW I’ve never had one!

Yes, marshmallow creme is sold under the name Marshmallow Fluff in New England. And of course I recognize the sandwich – it’s about all I would eat when I was six.

Oh yes, Dor, I’m all too familiar with the Flutternutter sandwich. I’ve never eaten one, but my dad loves them. Of course, my mom doesn’t allow them in his diet these days, but when he used to eat them, he added a few slices of banana. He said that made it healthy. 🙂

I haven’t had one either, but may have to break down and give it a try. After all it was almost the Mass. state sandwich!

You’re right, Dor, he does. 🙂 Of course, he has his moments where he says something and ends up laughing harder than others in the room. He’s cute!

We put the marshmallow stuff on a few sandwiches, none of them healthy. I think we did one with grape jelly.

Oh, yes. Rick and his dad liked them with a slice of banana.

I have heard of it, but have never eaten one. My granddaughter makes them (and eats them).

We have heard tell of marshmallow crème on our side of the mountains, but the general consensus is that it is just an urban legend. It is hard for me to believe the picture is real, I am thinking you have staged this like the Big Foot photos.

I have heard of the Fluffernutter, they were very popular when I was a kid. Sadly I have never had one and I don’t know why.
I would like to give a BIG shout out to the genius in Massachusetts who invented marshmallow crème….I LOVE YOU!

It’s been so long since I’ve had one I can’t remember why I would have purchased the Marshmallow Fluff in the first place. Certainly doesn’t fit the requirements of my food group rule, ‘if it has no nutrition value, don’t eat it’. I do remember I liked it, more for the peanut butter than the fluff. Then again, I was over thirty before I discovered the joys of a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I then gained 25 pounds making up for lost time on a limited income diet. PB and banana is always good. I still love real marshmallows melted into a cup of hot chocolate. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🙂

My kids used to beg to make these sandwiches all the time, especially the youngest. I knew the peanut butter would be nutritious but that marshmallow crème? No way. But I did let him make them from time to time and I admit I even ate one — they are pretty good. 😉

Fluffernutters are great! Definitely kid food, though. Being a Massachusetts native, I grew up eating them. My kids not so much. Now parents shudder at the thought of white bread, sugar/corn syrup-laden marshmallow creme and peanut allergies are causing peanut butter to be banned from schools. (Gheesh!) I haven’t had one in years. But I used to spread the peanut butter and fluff in thick layers, and take the first bite in the middle where it was especially gooey! It basically tastes like a really creamy, slightly sweet, peanut butter. Go on, Dor, you haven’t lived until you try one! check out Fluff’s homepage: http://www.marshmallowfluff.com/pages/homepage.html

Well, who would ever have thought that a flutternutter was food. Great name, although we’d not be able to have one here due to a complete lack of marshmellow creme. We have no such thing here, although I’m pleased to announce that we are well enough into this century to have peanut butter 🙂

Fluffernutter sandwiches bring back memories of girl scouts. We used to make them when camping and hiking.

You could stretch it a bit and say peanut butter is high protein. 🙂

Hahahaha! Yep, I might well have staged this whole thing Charlie except for all the folks who say they are familiar with Fluffernutters. I am bound and determined to try it at least once…. and maybe add something else for health giving properties. 🙂

Maybe you sensed the unhealthy quality in marshmallow creme and that’s why you never had one? I am no looking for a way to make them healthy snack choices. 🙂
