That is a kapok tree, also called silk floss tree. It has beautiful pink flowers in late spring which then produce softball size pods that open to release billows of white, cottony fiber.
I made the mistake of planting one but after the second year of having a lawn that looked like the refuse pile from a turkey plucking operation, I had it removed.

It does look like a cacti derivative. My friend identified it as a Kapok tree that has lovely pink blossoms in spring but sheds awful pod stuff at other times.
Wow! Definitely not a tree you want to climb.:) I assume it’s related to the cactus family.
