Do you know the meaning of your name, and why your parents chose it? Do you think it suits you? What about your children’s names?
As the story goes, my parents liked the name, Stephanie.
And they also liked the name, Ann.
So I was to be named Stephanie Ann.
But they noticed that together with our last name, the initials spelled, S.A.D., and being superstitious, they imagined the name would bring bad luck and would render me “sad” for the rest of my life.
At the time, there was a popular movie star named Dorothy, so they chose Dorothy Ann instead of Stephanie Ann and my initials were then D.A.D. Better.
Now that I am a married woman, the initials spell D.A.R. They give me some credibility as a possible Daughter of the American Revolution even though it’s not true.
And when my parents looked up Dorothy they found it has Greek origins and means “Gift of God.”
Now THAT is a bit difficult to live up to, don’t you think?
I think I may be a disappointment in His grand scheme of things.
My son’s name means “Valiant Protector” and sounds presidential.
He has a lot to live up to too.

My mom picked my name just because she liked the sound of it. I always felt like it was the wrong name–don’t ask me why. When I lived in Germany most people couldn’t pronounce my name quite and said something that sounded more like Teraytzie. That sounded more like me real name to me (obviously, I was a fanciful child). After half a century of living with Tracy, I’m beginning to grow used to it.
My name is a derivative of Therese which means “harvester.” Since I’m a gardener by avocation, some people would see that as accurate.

My name was supposed to be Veronica until my mother worked for a woman by that name. Yep, you guessed. Mom didn’t like her much. In the end I do like my name but I didn’t have much say in it at the time.

I was NED as a kid and I thought that was kind of cute. But now I am NER, so I am 75% nerd – which I guess is kind of true.

Well ! There’s food for thought as they say. You have given me something to think about. I know my mother named me Rita because at the time she loved all the Rita Hayworth films. However I must look up the meaning, also meanings of my sons names Thanks for the inspiration Dorothy.

So interesting about the origin of names and their meanings. I like the name, Tracy, especially if it is a derivative of Therese. 🙂

You are reminding me of my own strange nicknames – Dorfy (cause little bro couldn’t pronounce Dorothy), Dork (still being used), Snort (ikkk), and finally now, Dor. I like that one best. 🙂 You are no Nerd.

I have two older sisters. If I had been a boy, I would have been Ralph Andrew. It is important to consider how the initials will look on a letterhead. Yours turned out well!

My first name was given because I am pure, and the second because I’m precious. 🙂 Doesn’t that just choke you up!

Could be my mother liked Dorothy Lamour. On the other hand I just discovered from another blogger that Dorotya is Hungarian. Hmmmmm.

I don’t see why anyone would tease. Pearl is a perfectly lovely name – and as with pearls of the ocean, you are extremely valuable. 🙂

I guess association with Minnie Pearl was the problem. 🙂

Your parents were thinking ahead when they chose your name. Some don’t which is why I went to school with two girls whose initials spelled GAS and ASS. Lovely, huh? I made certain that all three of my children’s initials didn’t spell a darn thing! 🙂

Good thinking Cindy! “GAS” and “ASS” are worse than “SAD.” 🙂 Ha! Ha! We done well by our offspring at least where their names are concerned.
