My Dear Family,
I took this picture of Rozie on Thanksgiving Day. Isn’t she beautiful? As you know, she is probably very old – maybe 13 or 14 years by all our guesses. But sometimes, when she has her ears up, she looks young again (wish that worked for me). I often wonder what she was like as a puppy though. As you know, she was a rescue dog – rescued by our beloved Judi, so Rozie’s history’s a mystery.
The Games Dogs Play
When Rozie first came to us four years ago, she was still pretty rambunctious (me too). She was fast on her feet (me too) and would disappear down steep hills (not me) into the woods. The thought of losing her would leave me panicked and calling her name over and over until I gave up, ready to cry, too hoarse to continue yelling and well – distraught.
What if she can’t get back up the hill?
What if she broke her leg?
What if she is lost?
What if she ran into a bear?
What if I can’t get down there to her?
But, as soon as I stopped hollering, the rascal would nonchalantly stroll into view. I think she was deliberately playing Hide and Seek!
Nowadays she knows her limitations. She seems to understand that an uphill climb would be problematical since her legs are weak. We are a well matched pair! But sometimes I know she is wistfully contemplating another escape just for the fun of it.
Peculiar Habits
Bill calls her “Rose” and I had to laugh last week when he asked her, “Are you ready to get your nails done for Thanksgiving Rose?” He was taking her for a doggie manicure. When her nails get too long she bites them. I never met a dog who did that.
I never met a dog like this one anyway. She is a creature of rather peculiar habits:
- Her teeth chatter (loudly) when she is frightened. Ever hear a dog’s teeth chatter? Very strange.
- She also has the ability to whisper-bark. That means she can bark at low decibel levels so as not to awaken us in the middle of the night.
- And she pants for attention.
- Oh, and by the way, the anti-depressants are working and she hasn’t tried to jump off the deck lately. We are watching her carefully for wild mood swings or erratic behavior.
I did want to tell you she may be losing her hearing, and that’s a blessing. Thunderstorms and gunshots were once terrifying events, but she is either finally ignoring them or does not hear them anymore. It was hunting season in our part of Virginia on Thanksgiving Day and there were multiple shots. Rozie was oblivious. What a relief that must be for her. And what a relief for us not to deal with teeth chattering panic attacks (hers, not ours).
All in all, I’m delighted to report that Rozie is healthy, happy, and well loved.
And by the way, we are too.
Love and hugs from us and Rozie to you.
Love this and you you have The Blogger of The Year 2012 Award waiting over here for you

Ohhhh, she’s just beautiful!! And what a fabulous photo you took. I thought you said it was difficult to get a good photo of her? It’s taken a little off centre which is how they say to do it, the lighting is perfect, and her ears are all perked up. I think you are a pro photographer now!! 🙂

I love everything about Rozie! She is beautiful, original and barks to her own drummer. Was she a rescue?
The screaming like a crazy person with no response, followed by silence and the sudden appearance has always caused me grey hair! I think our dog learned that from my son.

Aging pets are hard on us. Even though you only have had her 4 years you have memories of a younger, spry dog. I hate to see them age although there are positives — like less trauma for thunderstorms. Our cat Jake is going on 15. He is slowing down considerably and mostly stays in the yard when he does go out which is seldom. He has few teeth but every once in a while the kitten comes out and he is a crazy cat for a few minutes. Makes me weepy!

Yay! You finally got a great photo of Rozie. That’s wonderful! You need to frame that one. I took Maggie to the local feed store and Santa was there taking photos with the dogs. It took them at least 10 tries to get her to look at the camera! I think they finally got one. We’ll see when it comes in the mail. 😉

Aw…. sweet Rozie. She knows how much she’s loved. My previous kitty was terrified or thunder, but not Miss Sassy Sundae! This was a sweet tribute to your four-legged fur-baby!

This was the accidental super photo Cindy. Rozie was alert because she was looking down the road and hoping for visitors. And I was just clicking away, hoping for the best. I am so proud of this shot and I plan to enlarge it and have it framed! Thanks for noticing too. You are a gem or as they say and “You Definitely ROCK!”

Yes, Rozie was a rescue from a kill shelter and who knows what her life was like before that. But now she has all the love she can handle and wide open spaces if she cares to roam. Thanks for stopping by and for loving Rozie too.

Thanks Kate. It is sad to watch a beloved pet grow old before your eyes. But you are so right – some things are nature’s way of making things easier – like the hearing loss in our dog, who was so terrified of loud noises. 🙂

How great that you remembered how I struggle to get a good picture of Rozie. And you’re right – I plan to frame this one. I may even have it painted. I know a lady who does dog portraits from photographs. Be sure to post the photo of Maggie. I can’t wait to see it. 🙂

Thanks shofar. Rozie is very special to me and to my husband, but we have decided she will be our last dog. We need flexibility now to go and come as we wish, but I am paranoid about leaving her or any dog we take into our family. I would much rather stay home with a true friend, and this makes our lives fairly restrictive.

You had said once that you had a hard time getting a picture of her, but that is a warm and beautiful photo. My dog sneezes when he is excited. How weird is that!

It’s hard leaving a pet with a stranger for 3 weeks’ long mission trips. A house/pet sitter who works gives minimal care only.

Oh I’m with you shofar… I just can’t leave Rozie in a kennel. It’s just too painful for both of us. 🙂

Thanks Cindy….. We aren’t absolutely sure but the vets have said Rozie is probably a “shepherd/chow mix.” She has some black markings on her tongue and I guess chows have black tongues. And the shepherd look is definitely there.

Congrats on your award. I love Rozie’s photo she is a beautiful girl. My dog Clarke is 12 now and he is going blind and deaf but still loves his walk every day and his food. How was your Thanksgiving? We don’t have that over here. 🙂
