Through a Glass Brightly
It’s raining again in Virginia. We seem to have an afternoon storm every few days, and I wonder. Do the animals of the forest become accustomed to sounds of thunder and regular downpours? Do they hide or go about their daily chores as if the sun is shining?
How I love to listen to the rain pelting our rooftop, and I love to watch it too. So I gazed out my kitchen window today and immediately saw a Mama Doe and her Fawn who were oblivious to weather. They were dining in a heavy downpour. Mom was munching the deliciously moist grass and quietly sitting nearby was Bambi, who most certainly was under strict orders not to move a muscle. They looked calm, happy and cool.
Oh, how I wanted a picture of this scene! But I knew if I opened the sliding door, they would hear me and swiftly disappear, so my only alternative was the kitchen window. Coping with window glass, rain, and the precarious movements of wildlife may have made these shots less than perfect. But I’m thrilled to have witnessed this little family who were so enjoying a rainy day and I am so delighted to have these slightly fuzzy shots to share.
How fun. Such beautiful creatures!

I never get tired of them, especially when the babies are caught unawares. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by my blog! In reading your post I thought of all the times I have shot photos of birds, squirrels, deer, chipmunks, etc. through glass windows for the same reasons you explained her. Regardless of whether the shots are razor sharp or romantically soft, your images here are beautiful. What a delightful moment it must have been to witness this scene!

Thank you Cecelia. Photographing through windows is not something I wish to do since I’m an amateur even in clear daylight. But this vision of Mom and fawn in the wild was simply irresistible. Thanks for stopping by and for your very kind words.

Okay…I’ll be the poo-poo lady here. I think deer are cute, as long as they’re about 2,000 miles away from me. They eat every thing. I don’t mind sharing a bit with them, but they’re hogs mowing through a garden in a night. They laugh at fences. Snicker at motion detectors. Thumb their hoofs at coyote urine.
I’m not fond of deer.

I love how you write about animals and your love for them and nature in general! Your sleeping dog story was SO PRECIOUS! I love dogs, too, and once had two dogs, so different from each other!

I never tire of seeing them Barb, even though they sometimes dine on my favorite flowers. There is a spray we use that actually works, called Liquid Fence. But their beauty and grace are worth the wait.

The deer in the rain really seemed totally relaxed. They paid no attention to the lightning and thunder or the torrential rain, but the Mama deer just kept on munching and the fawn remained perfectly still in waiting. Thanks Cathy.

I’m absolutely with you on this Lori. I hate open season around here and our property is marked to restrict hunting. I understand the over population problem, but there must be a better way. At least they say here the meat goes to feed those in need.
