For those of you who have been following my posts on the progress of construction of a neighborhood “Mystery Building”, and who thought the mystery was solved, there is more!
Yes, we know it will be a home. Around these parts, home is generally referred to as the “homeplace,” (all one word) and this is definitely going to be someone’s homeplace in rural Virginia. We know this because a friend went over and asked what the building would be!
“So, what’s the big mystery NOW?” you ask. “I mean, the building looks a bit on the odd side, but so what? We know it’s someone’s home.”
Well, one day I was merrily on my way to town and not thinking of the Mystery Building. After all, I know it’s someone’s homeplace now, so why dwell on the odd little dwelling anyway?
But, I cannot resist glancing in that direction to monitor progress and when I saw it from a distance I gasped in awestruck shock. WHAT are they doing NOW?!!!
What does it look like to you?

They are covering the back and the roof with DIRT!
Now I am going to look up things on the internet about landlocked housing.
Is their homeplace going to be underground?
Mostly underground?
Why?
Will they plant a garden on top?
Does this explain all the smokestacks and domes?
The first article I found in my search gives some very good clues about Underground Homes! Check out the article below. The second article below is my own first post, when the “homeplace” emerged as an ongoing mystery.

Probably belongs to some crazy architect! There goes the neighborhood
You sure you and Clifford haven’t moved up here?
A funny mystery indeed! My friend Melinda knows all about permaculture houses and she would probably be able to launch into a 20 minute explanation about what is happening. Not me though. It will be interesting to discover.
We may have to ask Melinda later about this. Now I’ve heard they ran into rock and had to suspend digging. Fascinating goings on.
Oh Dor, as you know I love a good mystery! And yes, I’ve been reading about the home on your blog, and like you, assumed that it was just that. But now to cover it with dirt? Hmmm… Are you sure you want to be taking pictures of it?
I bet they have spy cams and ground sensors, if they’re the type of people to live in a bunker!
I would laugh, but then I might regret it. As always, I love your perspective on things Melissa!
Spy cams and ground sensors? Hmmmmm!
I’ve seen underground homes before but not like this…..hmmm…very interesting. Almost sounds like an underground bunker to me. Okay, enough with the scary thoughts. You’re going to have to keep us posted. Inquiring minds want to know.
I will definitely let you know (unless they get me first).
I think I’m liking it less and less. Perhaps I’m too traditional.
You are not alone, but maybe it will surprise us all and feel cozy?
I’ll have to look at the articles, but it could be the whole insulation thing, like sod houses in the early settlement years. This is quite a mystery.
I think you are onto something here Lilly – an insulation thing. They may even plant grass on the roof. I notice they have a herd of goats grazing in an enclosure nearby!
Maybe they want to be like Hobbits!?!?
My husband laughed at this! He’s a Hobbit fan.
Yayyy, another Hobbit fan!! I’m glad I could make him laugh
. You wait – I’ll bet any day now you’re going to see a fun-loving hobbit with big hairy feet come walking out of his house to welcome Gandalf the wizard who has come for a visit to convince the hobbit to go on an amazing adventure
.
You and my husband are definitely strange! I mean, who loves hairy feet and who the %#@**$% is Gandalf?
Oh no, you didn’t just ask that?!?! Could it be that you have never read The Hobbit?? Everyone must read The Hobbit at least once in their life! By the way, calling me strange is the best compliment you could ever give me ♥♥. I’m very strange, and I’m proud of it!!
Nope – never read The Hobbit but I fear my husband will force me to see the movie. And if you insist, I will get a copy somewhere and will let you know if I’m “into” it. Being un-strange, I probably will not “get it.” Notice all my youthful slang here?
You are too funny
What an unusual house! No wonder you’re been so fascinated with the mystery building. I hope that you get to meet the owners and learn the story behind the home.
Me too… I’m sure they have something mysterious in mind for this place.
Looks as if they are preparing for some doomsday…December 21??? We will stay tuned!
Well, today is it – Dec. 21st! I wonder if the mystery building will still be there in the morning!
I will not live underground. Not now, anyway. I guess someday it is inevitable.
A suffocating thought!
Hmm, the mystery continues. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Ditto Lori!
